Old injury haunting me? Or just bad knees? exercises?

When I was 14 I injured my left knee doing something stupid and dangerous (bowling.) When those slippery shoes landed me in the gutter, it jumped out of its socket laterally, and then popped itself back in when I managed to stand up and extend it.

Since then, it's come out again on several occasions, maybe 5 times in the last 18 years. Usually when it's bent to the limit, and there's weight on it.

I thought it was from the injury. But why, then, would my right knee have also joined in on the act as well, a few years later? It started doing the same thing as the left, with no apparent initial injury!

I can do a lot of stuff on them, but if I were to, say, crouch down like a catcher in a baseball game, they would blow. And the last time one blew, it hurt for a year and a half.

Anybody else have crappy knees like this? And what did you do to get them climbing? I'm only in the 'scrambling' phase now, but a few times I've had to reach with the feet untuil my knee was in it's 'caution zone', and it's scaring me, that one might blow in a bad place.

i tore two ligaments in my knee from climbing two weeks ago and now am in therapy, but my guy says that when my knee's healed all you have to do it make sure that your stretch correctly before, he also said that is probably that reason i messed up my knee in the first place

supernoob, you have knee cap problems. and you are going to need to strengthen your quads if you want to keep that little sucker at the front of your knee. Your problem is more about how you were made than about a relatively minor 'injury' (most can bowl without a patellar dislocation). not surprising that you are starting to have the same problem on the other side--most of us are pretty symmetrical, no? the medial patellofemoral ligament is the main restraint to lateral motion of the knee cap (where yours are tending to go). This can actually be reconstructed. But only in Extreme Cases. You would definetly benefit from some PT to really tone your quads in a way that doesn't cuase you to have pain in the front of your knee. A good PT can also teach you some movement techniques to help thsi and can even teach a few ways to tape you knee caps that might help. See if your primary doc will send you for a few sessions to learn the exercises and techniques. good luck!

It could be the cap, I guess, but if memory serves, it feels like it's back/side related, and not so much in the front.

When this happens, the large lump that appears on the side of my knee is way back, as if something is popping out behind the LCL, to the outside, and the resulting pain is mostly anterior an lateral as well. (On the outside of the knee, towards the back of the leg.)

It takes a good 'kick' extension to pop it back right. There's a clinic down off the hill here that's open sometimes, with an itinerate doc that shows up once or twice a week. I guess I can make him my primary, since there's nobody else for 50 miles.

I'm thinking of strapping it up with that "coban" stuff they use on horses (like a sticky ace bandage) before climbing. They gave it to my wife when she tore her knee up on shale, to cover the stitches and bandages, and it keeps nice compression on the knee.

thanks for the advice. I'll probably need to visit some kind of doc (dread!)

I strained my shoulder socket realy badly hanging by one arm in a pull up position almost two years. It took alot of PT and weight lifting to make it even semi usable. I just got back into climbing this year again after almost a year and a half off. yeah injuries are a bitch. My best suggestion is to find a doctor that gives you the right training regimen to get your injured parts back up to full strength.

I love it when laypeople who know nothing talk like experts. And unfortunately, they're all around us.

Anyway, if you're having a subluxation issue, the bad part is that the more it happens, the more it's likely to happen. The ligaments and/or joint capsule which get stretched out during the sublux often don't return back to their normal length. This means they're more lax and less strong to hold your joint in place in the future. Trust me, I know firsthand all about this.

The patella is outside your knee joint capsule as far as I remember, but regardless of whether it's that or some other problem in the back of your knee, you need to get this checked out by a sports med specialist if possible pronto. These kinds of things can often just build on themselves and require more drastic therapy later.

Good luck.
