I got wrist tendonitis when i was climbing at wild iris last summer. i guess it was from the obvious trying to pull down way to hard on small holds without a warm up. however since then my wrist has been a constant source of irritation. if anyone else has had something similar i would definatly be into hearing how you got rid of it.

I have it as well and I hate to tell you, but you better stop climbing for a while - starting now. I kept climbing through the irritation and it only got worse. In fact, my hand became totally useless; I couldn't even hold a can of beer in it for a while. I haven't been able to climb hard in about 6 months, because of it. Also, go see a doctor! He'll probably give you some anti-inflamatories that will help your body heal itself. -Sheppe

I wish it wasnt true but Sheppe is right, the only way to get rid of it is to stop climbing on it. A friend of mine got it in his fingers and had to stop climbing for a year. The best way to avoid it is by not climbing so much and as soon as it starts to hurt take a break, you gotta remember its for the best!

I had it real bad in my left wrist. I had to wear this brace for about 3 weeks. I took about 1 week off and then continued to climb lightly but started taping my wrist each time. Taping helped a great deal. I also took a lot of advil. My left wrist is doing great now but now I'm developing the same problem in my right wrist. You do need to rest it. Don't be like me and get to the point where you're in so much pain that you're bailing off routes and only then do you realize that you have to stop for a while. That sucks for you and your partners.

The only way is rest, rest, and ice... I have a slight tenditis (spelling?) in my right wrist and elbow from so much climbing and kayaking... I have 'childs tenditis' (osgood - schlatters) as I call it in my right knee (along with that bad ACL) rest is the only answer... BUT you're doctor can give you a brace and/or how to tape wrists when you do go back into climbing... and remeber the most important thing to do before climbing is to STRETCH! It causes less problems, dieases, and injuries! So please stretch!

they're all right. don't think that you are special and can climb through it. Take Ibuprofren (sp) and ice it and DON'T USE IT. Tendonitis doesn't heal with time if used, it gets WORSE MUCH MUCH WORSE. When you start using your wrists again, get into it slowly. Climb easy and for short periods of time, and if it hurts again stop immediately and ice. Doctors will just tell you to ice and take Ibuprofren or some other anti-inflammatory so if you KNOW it is tendonitis then don't go...

they thought I had tendonitis in my wrist for about 6 months turned out it was a torn ligament from archery. Anyway I tape my wrist to climb when it is bothering me and it helps. Also go to the doctor is could be something more. I suggest a wrist ad hand specialist. I had a shot of cortazone and it helped. They sent me to physical therepy when they thought I had tendonitis and they showed me many different ways to strengthen my wrists and tape them to keep it from getting worse. Here is one way to tape your wrist. First make sure you have prewrap because it will hurt coming off. Spread out you fingers and then with them spread out go around the wrist (where the watch would go) three times. Then do the same about twice more three layers going towards your elbow. Its the easiest way to tape your wrist since the other ones can be ineffective if you mess up slightly. Good Luck. but GO TO THE DOCTOR.

bumblesbounce I was miss diagnosed. Because the ligament I torn doesn't show up on an mri or anything else, you have to go by the space between the bones, on the good hand and the bad hand to tell how much it is torn.

Man that sucks, it doesn't really ever go away....ask my grandfather (sorry for the bubble burst). But it's not the end, it'll just have to be nursed.... I tore my rotator cuff and blew out my AC joint in my shoulder....I know your pain, overhangs absolutely kill me, just please give injuries time to heal, or you end up like me....making them worse and suffering more!!! Sorry for your misfortune!! Your Partner in pain, Noal

I had the worst chronic tendonitis in my left wrist for several years, from constantly cranking mantles on the small rounded boulders that are everywhere around San Diego. It got to where I couldn't even push a door open without collapsing in pain. The Dr. took x-rays and did bone scans looking for some damage that would account for the level of pain I had, but as it turned out, it was severe tendonitis. The medical fix? Rest it. Right. So I kept looking on my own, and here's how I fixed it. 1- You gotta quit doing whatever tweaked it for awhile. That meant laying off the presses for me. 2- Take anti-inflammatory med every day, as a pre-emptive thing. Don't wait for the pain to start. Ibuprofin was best for me. 4- 200mg tabs every day. Once the inflammation starts, it keeps aggravating the condition, so you need to suppress that. Asprin & Tylenol work too. 3- Learn to tape your wrist to prevent hyperextension in both directions. The tape has to allow a certain range of motion and still support the joint while limiting flexion. Be careful not to cut off any blood flow either. Takes practice to get it right. 4- The most important. Massage the painful area constantly. Tendonitis inflammation prevents the tendon from moving through the carpal tunnels in your wrist bones. Eventually permanent scar tissue forms on the tendon, and any motion that tries to pull the scar tissue thru the carpal tunnel aggravates the injury again. Massage breaks down the scar tissue, and if you are on the pills to prevent inflammation, it will eventually heal. Give it plenty of time after you feel healed to really test it, or you will ruin it again. Good Luck [ This Message was edited by: ronamick on 2002-12-10 20:08 ]

tendonitis will never heal without rest. they were right. don't take pills, though. the worst thing you can do to your body is silence it when it's injured. the whole purpose of pain is to give you the message that something is wrong. you could end up hurting it worse because you don't think you're hurting at all

I hope your talking about pain killers and not anti inflammatories? right? If I learned anything in Pre-Med it was that injuries like that NEED anti-inflam. Other wise you just worsen the condition resting almost!

Tyneol is for headaches, aches, and pains. Motrin is for swelling. There is a difference. That is why for example the doctor told me to take PAINKILLERS for a head injury, but on the other hand ANIT-INFLAMMORTORY (sp?) for TENDITIS... please do get it right! Fawn

Ibuprofen ("Advil") is an anti-inflammatory medicine that will help you in your recovery. The swelling restricts the flow of blood and such, so reducing it is key to recovery.

If you put it in a sling, or a wrap or something, it will help you remember not to use it. I did something to my shoulder at one point, and it just got worse and worse because of my job. It didn't get better until I quit my job, and took a while off climbing. A sling would have solved that, had I used one, but I didn't want to since I could still use my arm. Also, a poster above said something about hyperextending your wrist both directions. You can only hyperextend one way. the other is hyperflex. If you bend your hand up, it's hyperflex. if you bend your hand down, it's hyperextend. Just thought I'd mention that.

I have forearm tendinitis, which is kind of similar, i have found that if you perform an ice massage regularly it helps.
