Okay. My climbing shoes are 2 and a half sizes smaller than my street size. And my toes are pretty much deformed after I climb. And my big toe is literally purple from a bruise from my shoes. So yeah. Lately the front half of THREE toe nails have fallen off after climbing. They are not discolored nor gross looking just all weird shaped from the shape of the shoe. is it the size of the shoe that's causing my nails to fall off? Have you ever heard of this happening?

Stop taking your shoes off, and your toenails will stay in place.

Sounds to me like your shoes are sized to small.

Did you have them sized in a shop and get advice when buying them? Toe nails coming off is never good - the toe area can get infected from lack of protection.

Have you ever heard of this happening? sounds like you already know the answer. Yep - either leave them on all the time to keep the toenails on; or take them off & allow the toenails to fall. Of course, continuing to wear the shoes will leave you like the ancient Chinese ladies who kept their feet bound & had to be carried from place to place because they couldn't walk. Get better fitting shoes! (That does not mean tighter!)

Echoing what Bill413 said - yeah, your shoes are far too small and you're on the way toward permanent damage to your feet. The bruising and deformation you mention is good indication that you're cutting off the blood supply to your toes. You're risking tissue and nerve damage with the possibility of bone and joint damage as well. A good fit does not mean "as small a shoe as possible that you can still stuff your feet into". Get the right width and volume for your feet. Going down in size mostly makes the shoe shorter, and while some shoes stretch, they basically don't stretch in the length. So in the fight of soft tissue against rubber, the latter will always win. Wear shoes in the shop for 30 minutes. If your toes are numb or deformed, don't buy those shoes.

In reply to: Okay. My climbing shoes are 2 and a half sizes smaller than my street size. That's too bad. I usually go with 1 to 2 sizes smaller, but everybody is different.
In reply to: And my toes are pretty much deformed after I climb. deformed? like Sloth in 'the Goonies'?

Curt Well, you spoiled it with that last one....I was about to ask if using a crowbar & tape to get into a smaller size is better than just forcing them in unaided.

My shoes fit though, like I like how the show basically becomes my foot. They're just a pain. Like, I've had them for six months, and the rubber on the bottom is getting soft, so I may be due for a new pair. But I was sized and everything by two really ace climbers who have done some major cool shit and such and they told me they weren't too tight. So yeah. Maybe my next pair will be only two sizes smaller than my street...
