I received this email from Robert Mecus from the State of NY asking me to post this information on RC.com. ATTENTION SHANGUNK MULTIPLE USE AREA CAMPERS Due to continued impact on public health, safety and environmental resources at the Shawangunk Multiple Use Area, designated campsites are being reduced to 9 as shown on the map below. (Click on the PDF attached, it's the most recent map) All designated camp sites will be on the south side of the road and large enough to accommodate the legal limit of up to 9 campers per site. Groups are encouraged to share campsites in order to allow the maximum number of 81 campers. Parking will only be allowed in the main parking lot on the south side of the road, the same side of the road as camping. The parking lot on the north side of the road will be blocked off to prevent the public (campers) from parking there and crossing the road to camp. Parking along the shoulder of route 299 will be prohibited to limit traffic/pedestrian issues. Any questions should be directed to Jeffrey Wiegert at (845) 256-3084

I will upload the map as soon as it is approved by photo editor. The source is an email that was sent to me by the state of NY.

No, this MUA (multi use area) is further down the road on route 299.

Hopefully a local farmer/landowner will provide camping for us. I knew this was coming and that there were a few hot on closing the north side. It's too bad.

I actually suspect this is somewhat part of the long-term plan to transition over to the AAC. Just out of curiosity, anyone know where exactly the AAC is planning to set up camp, so to speak? I had always heard it was very close, if not part of, the MUA land.

Last night I had a nightmare about something that happened at the MUA. About two and half years back my partner and I were getting ready to set up camp. It was a weekday evening late in the season and the place was empty. A car with Delaware plates pulled into the lot, nearly crashing into my car and parked beside me. The driver killed his engine and sat there smoking a cig. After about ten minutes, he got out of the vehicle and approached us, announcing: "I don't like you." Needless to say, my partner and I hopped in my car and got the hell out of there. I bottomed out on one of the larger rocks in the middle of the lot and drove back to New Paltz before finding somewhere else to camp. In retrospect I'm not sure why I didn't call the police.

If only there were some sort of website that had maps, and roads, and road numbers, that you could look up and see where 299 near the Gunks! Someone needs to get right on that. Oh, and I suppose that in a way, Camp Slime is a "pay" camp site, since anyone who camps there has to buy the regular Gunks user pass. But then again, everyone has to pay for that.

In reply to: Just out of curiosity, anyone know where exactly the AAC is planning to set up camp, so to speak? I had always heard it was very close, if not part of, the MUA land. It's very close but is not part of nor does it abut MUA land. It's on the south side of 299 a few hundred yards west of the MUA land. Development of the new AAC/PIPC/MP campground is part of the new Minnewaska State Park Master Plan but the last public word is the campground lacks funding, at least for now.

Are you allowed to sleep in the car in the preserve parking lots? I have slept in the car on the side of the road when the MUA sites and parking lot were full. The MUA parking lot on the South side alone certainly cannot hold enough cars for 81 people. That's 20 cars if each one holds 4 people -- no way.

The official word is no, and I have seen on two occasions, people roll in, break out camp and then be asked to leave. Another, better option, would be the public parking lot in-town that is on the side-street that the Gilded Otter is on (it's about an 1/8 of a mile past the Otter). I have no idea if this is legal, but the police have rolled by and didn't say a word. Of course, I had no mess, no party, just my cooler under my tailgate and my gear jammed on the front seats. Edit to add: Look for the "green" area off Huguenot on this map: http://www.villageofnewpaltz.org/filemgmt_data/files/Parkingzonesmap10-17-07flat.pdf

Is there anything I'm missing? Actually, I have been to the Gunks several times and camped on the south side, according to the map, every time. I misread this thread prior to a trip up this past weekend and actually went out of my way to camp on the north side. : S I saw several other cars on the north side and found marked camping there as well. Some spots seemed wiped out but others were definitely still marked for camping. The south side seemed packed with cars at 6am in the morning when we were up and we also saw rangers on the south side several times while driving by; but none on the north side where we camped. Seems a bit inconsistent.
