I looked around and didn’t see where anyone had posted about this. If it has already been done, then please delete it. This is the information that was told to me once we got back to camp on sat night. If any of the below info is incorrect then I apologize. On sat. January the ,3rd Jose Pereyra of Venezuela and his partner (I am not sure of his name right now) were attempting to do Las Auras on El Toro at el portero chico. http://www.rockclimbing.com/cgi-bin/photos/jump.cgi?Detailed=1340 BBCode u1 End --> If you look at the highest point on el toro and follow the black streak going strait down the middle of the face and through the shadows. The route is a 22-pitch trad route. They were attempting to second the route. What I was told was that late in the afternoon on sat Jose and his partner were near the top of the route. Jose was leading and took a fall. When he fell several of his pieces of gear pulled. Jose the struck a ledge bellow his partner. The partner the somehow made his way down to Jose and assessed the situation. At this point he realized that Jose was already dead. The partner was forced to cut the rope in order to descend the route. His body was recovered via helicopter on Sunday from a ledge about 400 feet up the route. This is all of the info that I have right now. My thoughts and prayers go out to Jose's family, friends, and his partner. stewart [ This Message was edited by: stewbabby on 2003-01-08 16:10 ]
