Dr. Piton,
I know that the ground-down pointed BD Skyhook fits like a glove on enhanced placements, but fill me in on its other uses.
I also know that you can grind hooks for secret weapons. Please spill the beans.

You need to grind hooks very carefully, or you'll ruin the heat treatment of the steel. If you grind too fast and don't somehow cool the metal, it gets hot and anneals to a very soft steel. The best way is to do it under a continuous stream of water or other coolant. Or you can grind a little bit, quench the hook in water and repeat over and over.
A file can also be used to sharpen the hook. An old one won't be sharp enough to cut the hardened steel, though.

i used an angle grinder to sharpen my hooks and found that this quick method worked ok and the hooks are still rock solid. i have to admit that i am unsure wether this was luck or the concerns about making the steel soft again are somewhat overstated

1xLeeper pointed
1xLeeper flat
1xTalon
I could just take two talons but the Leepers are stronger (1000lbs I'm told by mr Leeper) and sometimes you get funky placements were you can't fit a talon.
1xstandred BD grappling hooks
1xcut down and pointed grappling hook (this is designed for real 'flatty' edges
2xpointed grappling hooks (my main hook). These are hand filed to a sharp point so you can hook the tiniest dint on edges.
2xPika BIG hooks (lighter and bigger then the Fish hook).
1xmicro cam hook
1xstandred cam hook
1xwide cam hook
2xAlloy fragile flake hooks
I hate 10mm flat tape as I've had it bust several times on me and so use 5mm perlon tied with a single fishermans not. Worn tape has almost no strength but even a piece of perlon that's abraided half way through will still give you a couple of kn of holding power. It does make you look like a novice but so does hitting chicken head ledge when you're tie off blows on your cam hook!

I only own 2 cam hooks (a regular and a wide). I'm about to buy more so I can keep at least one on each aider at all times. Which size comes in the handiest for the most part? I'll assume Andy finds the big alloy fragile flake hook the most useful. Is that the case?

Although they look a little funky I find I use my alloy fragile hooks more then any of the other hooks as they seem to really bite and exsert less force on a feature then a cam. I've only used my micro hook a few times and generaly stacked with beaks or blades (a good tecnique in shallow slots).
I recon good cam hook technique can bring a route down a grade, espiecally exspando (the peg, hook, peg, hook method)

I'm really not sure there is a lot of voodoo to sharpened hooks.
It is not rocket science.
It is a very short and easy task. You do not use a grinder. I'm a fisherman, and I use my hook file. It's a five-minute job.
I have always filed my hooks to about an eighth-inch-wide "point" - but I read above that Andy really makes his sharp. I wonder if this is better?
I have only pointed my Grappling hooks and my regular Chouinard Sky aka Cliffhanger hooks. These are my workhorse hooks and I use them preferentially.
I have never pointed a Talon. I do, however, gently tap my Talon into bat hook holes with my hammer. The trick is to tap it so it has a bit of bite without enlarging the hole by crumbling the rock so that it loses its bite.
Talons seem spooky at first, until you try to take it out of the hole! Then you might be [pleasantly] surprised.

I hope to pass those hook moves with my extendo monster cheater stick. And dont say it has no risk. Cheating that waisted rurp or sun bleached fuzzzzzzy thing can be just ass much fun. So I skipped a few moves.....Oh well. Don't tell the rock police, I might just die if the found out... :mrgreen:

Cheater sticking past dicey placements is not climbing.
Why not clean the junk RURP and put in a new one - you will be helping to clean the route of fixed trash and improve the quality for those that follow.
Don't ignore fixed trash!! Clean it!!!
Contrary to Pete's beliefs, there are routes that require specialized modified hooks; without them you will be screwed.
