Do girls help you to climb better or do they distract you? Same question for the girls but in reverse. I think that they can be helpful and hurtful at different doeses IE walking by or showing you up. let me know what you think. clmerma

You have no idea how many I've pulled off things I don't think I could have normally when I thought a hot girl was watching. My friends would decry me, dropping the route a grade (from say, 5b to 5a) claiming it was 'tainted by chick power'. On the other hand, if they're whinging or nagging ... that can add a grade or two!

It may just be me, but I don't let any guy distract me from climbing. The only person that distracts me is myself. My own brain tells me that I can or can't do it, so I definitely don't need any other distractions!

My woman is a well, woman. She she climbs with me. People in general kind of make me climb harder. I tend to lame out when I'm by myself, but if I have anyone around my competitive nature kicks into full gear and I try damn hard. Sometimes though I just give a rats ass either way. Blah.

I like climbing with women, they approach climbs and especially problems differently and it lets me view climbs with a different eye so to speak. As far as showing off, I climb for personal satisfaction. If I wanted to show off, I'd play football or something like that.

My friends and I have a specific term for the effect girls (or more accurately simply the presence of a female in the vincinity) have on our athletic abilities: "Chick power". Yes, it is politically incorrect, but I really don't care. Chick power is wonderful. I climb better, play basketball better, etc. etc. etc. Unfortunately, it can cause the occasional errant no-look-pass out of bounds, resulting in a frantic dive into the first row of the stands. Heh heh heh. Well... maybe it's not so unfortunate, or even accidental. Conclusion: Chick power is good for everything.

I think you are a sexist bastard...a chauvinist pig, if you will. This is a totally ignorant and stupid question. I think all female members will agree... breathe stone R C

rocmonkey... are you saying you've NEVER done anything to impress a girl? The question may be sexist, but at the same time the fact does remain that girls and guys are sometimes attracted to eachother and that often changes their behaviour, right? Right! Personally, I like climbing with girls because they do tend to approach a problem with more finesse. You'll see guys doing 2 foot dynos all day to make this one reach, and then a girl will come along and do it statically...beautiful! I also tend to find girls to be more mellow and they can hold a better conversation than many guys. And they're less competitive, which can be a good thing at times (eliminates many stupid mistakes). Of course, the occasional testosterone fest that occurs at the local bouldering wall is great for bolstering your skills (and your ego). Plus, I can't deny that some girls are just mighty fine to look at. But hey, I know girls like looking at guys to, so what's the big deal? And they get to see us with shirts off... wish they would return the favor sometime. j/k I'm really not THAT sexist.

naturalhigh I did not say I dont like to climb with girls...clmerma's first comment puts female climbers down because "they distract" us. If that isn't sexist what is? "hurt you by showing you up" I am training two female climbers at the moment. One is my wife the other her friend. I climb with girl, I train with girl, and I enjoy seeing them reach new heights and even outperforming me sometimes. But making it sound like they are the reason we dont perform is sick... Take heed clmerma! breathe stone R C

It looked more like a question than a statment to me rocmonkey. Fact is gals can be a distraction. It's not the gals fault, thats just the way it works. God knows I'm a sucker for a pretty face Before you go telling me I'm sexist too, you should understand that I have worked in very isolated conditions where women were in the majority, I've worked under female Deck Bosses and even a female 1st Mate. All these gals earned my respect cause they knew what the hell they were doing but it didn't mean some of them wern't bloody nice to look at too! clmerma's question might be a little un-PC but it's not sexist

Hey, firstly the rock is there to be climbed; and secondly it doesn't matter if you are a guy or a girl, its how you butt looks to the opposite sex watching from below!

If you're worried about how a girl / guy will affect your climbing by being present, you're climbing for the wrong reasons. Do yourself a favor and stay in the gyms where you can show off and not hog real rock. Climbing isn't about impressing other people, it's about testing yourself. Be happy when you can achieve something because your own technique has improved, not because some little hottie on the ground is staring at you.

I wish that my wife could climb with me. Unfortunately she suffered a serious accident two years ago that servered all the tendons to the two outside fingers on her dominant hand and never recovered the strength. She cannot fully close her hand and has no grip. She loves the outdoors but after one climbing trip she won't go with me because she says its no fun just watching. While I'm climbing I really don't think about who is on the ground other than my belayer but once on the ground it is nice to have a mixed group to chat with. Climb On

females tend to be shorter than me (there are exceptions of course). I enjoy seeing how they approach the same problem that I approach at the parts where I was fully extended to make a reach. As for distracting me... I don't think they do. -Bryan

The real question is : Do elements of one's environment affect one's climbing performance. Answer: Of course. The "hows" of that are particular to each person's wonderful spectrum of personality.

I do not think it makes any difference though I do tend to flex or pose a little more when there is a hot chick or my wife watching me...so probably I am wasting energy I could be using on the rock...but then again I only climb 5.10 so who really cares where the energy goes...
