I was wondering how other places in North America and beyond raise money to pay for putting up routes. Our local bolt fund is pretty much a joke and I have spent a ton of cash on bolts and hangers. I've now written a guide book to try and help cover my costs.
How does everyone else's climbing community approach this issue?

In Yosemite, individuals (dudes) will climb into dumpsters and fish for cans.

They can buy bolts with the proceeds but usually just buy food.

If they have some scratch left over they will buy bolts and do a route.

They also pride themselves on NOT placing bolts.

Bill

Ryan,

Check here http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?topic=12431&forum=54&8

Or check with jds100 himself, he may be helpful in your quest for dough. Otherwise have you considered a second job? That seems to be the way it will work out for me.

we have a jar at the shop and people put change in it, guid book. if we take a tourist out we ask for a "donation" and our own dam pocket. the climbing shop in town sells us the bolts for cost because we bring them buissness, im shure if you talk to your local shop they would do the same, they dont lose money but more people will climb and so they get more green. good luck and dont get to down on it. its all in the name of fun hey .....

In Lander WY they have a thing called BARF (Bolt Anchor Replacement Fund). They have put gum ball machines all over town, and all the money that they make from them goes towards replacing bolts and anchors. Seems to be working quite well, as I haven't seen any really bad bolts.
