that's a lame site but its ok dude. i wouldn't expect a texan to point me to the best location to buy aide gear. looking for low cost and basic selection. shipping speed does not matter as long as it is received in a month...

What hooks do you want? The supertopo basic hook set is described as the following: - A talon or bat hook - A cliffhanger - A pointed cliffhanger - A grappling or fish hook Questions of my own: - What exactly is a bat hook? I thought it was for hooking shallow drilled holes. Does the talon do best for this? Pika sells "le Bat Hook" which is a split point. Can't you just use a pointed leeper (logan hook) or a sharpend cliffhanger? - A filed cliffhanger verses the leeper logan? Which is best? Is there a difference? The logan seems smaller. - A grappling hook is BD's larger hook and works up to 1.5" while the Fish hook works to 2". Then there is the fish captain hook that works to 3". So how important is it to have these larger hooks? Fish says he's sold out. - Pika also sells all these specialty hooks. Left handed, right handed, small, large. Toucans, auks, spoonbills, ibis. These all seem highly specialized. Can somewhere comment on when and where these types of hooks start to work well? So... to answer your original question: Check out mgear.com and shorelinemtn.com. Also, fishproducts.com, bdel.com, and (as mentioned) pikamtn.com

If you're just looking for a general reference for an online climbing gear retailer, you can't go wrong with www.gearexpress.com or www.shorelinemtn.com. Both have good prices and excellent customer service. Both of them sell standard BD hooks (talon and cliffhanger, etc.) and Leeper cam hooks. Do yourself a favor and buy a Fish Hook, too. Russ is his own store front and you can find his stuff at: www.fishproducts.com I have a set of Pika cam hooks and find them to be mostly useless compared to Leeper. Pike does make some other specialty-type hooks, but nothing you'd want to toss in to the mix for a basic hook set up. Ed

'specially, like, with your mighty Merrican dollar, it's tough to beat the Mountain Equipment Co-op for hooks, eh? Unfortunately, you will need a Hoser to mail them to, and who will forward them to you. The Co-op isn't "allowed" to ship its super-cheaply-priced gear to the States, since it would piss off the US distributors. If you really want your jaw to drop, check out the Co-op prices on pitons! Remember - your Yanqui dollah is currently worth about $1.33 of our pathetic Loonie. You do the math......

I'm just bargain-spraying, but Pika hooks were 75% off in the Mountain Shoppe last weekend. 8)
