You want an intro sports rack, here you go Shoreline Mountain Sports Crag Package. Its about half the price of what you had, oh and it has free shipping because its over $75.00. I have ordered from this company before and have nothing but positive experiences. If you want to substitute things call and ask they just might help you out.

2 daisys with lockers is not overkill, its a littel heavy handed but not excessive. i ALWAYS want 2 points of contact when i go off belay, andmiitedly i feel you can use 2 slings and only one of them has to be locking, one non locker, but really think about it. you are going off belay, at a height were decking WILL kill you, do you really want to trust your life to a single peice of gear, when you are sport climbing, you have several draws in, they cant ALL zipper. but just one peice at the top of the climb is lunacy, and sooner or later will bite you in the ass, its not macho, but at least your alive!!!!!

Petzl spirts look snazy without the teeth, but I've never really known anybody who had trouble clipping because of the tooth on a biner. I think the spirits are mostly a marketing ploy aimed at getting noobs to spend twice as much on gear because they don't know any better.

Just my two cents.

I think it's unfair to classify a type of biner as a marketing ploy simply because it's not useful for a specific type of climbing. Keylocks may not be useful as components of sport draws, but they sure are useful for trad draws and for racking gear. (Trying to lengthen or shorten your quickdraw with one hand while sketched and/or pumped comes to mind...)

Here is what I have come up with for now:

6x Petzl Spirit/Express 17 cm QDs
6x Petzl Express Quickdraw Sling 25cm
6x Petzl Spirit Carabiner - Bent Gate
6x Petzl Spirit Carabiner - Straight Gate
2x Petzl William D Screw-lock
1x Helmet (I guess whichever feels most comfy...my skull is not a fan of blunt trauma, and I've cracked one too many bicycle helmets...)
1x Sewn Sling (cordalette)
1x Mammut Flash Duodess Superdry 10.5mm x 60m

This comes to a total of around $615 which is pretty darn expensive compared to what I've seen in my forum searches, probably because of the Petzl draws.

If you search the Internet you could save a lot on your gear if you buy all in one, most of the internet retailers have free shipping within the U.S. above $ 110 or more/less.
Look at www.rockempire.com or www.gearexpress.biz.
Good luck :!:

Hmm well a local gear shop is having a sale, and this is what I think I will do:

Get a couple (2-4) BD straightgate/wiregate draws
A couple (4 is all they have left) Petzl 17cm draws
And then supplement those with 4 longer draws that I make myself using some odd combination of biners, I don't know anymore it's too bloody complicated.

But this way I get 20% off hardware, I think. I don't know. Here's to hoping they will count the quickdraws I make as 'one' item (the discount applies only to 10 items, apparently).

Add to your wishlist:
A rope bag that has a decent sized tarp. When you are out at Exit 38 and the Cascade Rain Gods decide to dump on you, it's very nice to be able to bail off a route, throw your rope and draws into your rope bag and get out of there without having to organize any gear as everything gets wet. I got all my sport gear (rope, bag, 12 draws, two locking biners, 2 long slings) for $210 by grabbing the best deals from different online sites (including a new 60m Bluewater dry rope off Ebay for a screaming deal - there are so many Ebay sellers in the Seattle area that I've rarely paid for shipping, I just buy from locals and then pick up the stuff myself).

Are you still at UW? I live about 5 min north of you in the summer; let me know if you are ever looking for a partner :D I've got all the sport gear you would need anyhow!

Yeah, I probably should have put in a word of caution about buying gear on ebay - I only buy stuff that is new and has a picture of it with the packaging still on. Haven't had any problems yet! Some of my friends buy used gear but in general I don't like using stuff that I don't know the complete history of.

So I ended up just getting 12 BD Quicksilver 2 draws for $65

They're the 2003 model (I have no idea why they've been sitting there for so long) but hey, at $5 bucks a draw...

Now I'm wondering if I bought the right amount...
