are they a must..no...obviuously because they have not been around forever. I could live without them if I absolutely HAD to. and thats it.

other than that I love them and consider them to be an essential part of a modern rack. I have led plenty of routes with just nuts and the like. Great practice but I wouldn't want to have to do it for all routes all the time.
