Im a 23-yr old girl in Arizona w/ passion for extreme sports, Im also trying to stay fit while going to school FT and wk'g FT as well. I'd want to start rock-climbing devotedly when possible (never done it b-4re) but Ive found out that this is a costy sport, and not very affordable for me at the moment. Is a bit frustrating but almost all outdoor sports I truly find appealing are the $ame way. (skydiving, snowboarding, bungee jumping....) Can someone gimme tips on how to start rock-climbing when in a situation like mine? I dont understand why, if is an 'outdoors sport', gym memberships and classes can be so expensive. HELP PLEASE!! =) K.

Take up bouldering. Outside, on rocks. Since you live in Arizona, and are a 23 year old girl, Curt Shannon, surrogate father/climbing guru for young women should be willing to help you, hahaha! All you need for bouldering is a pair of rock shoes, about 80 bucks. You'll have to stat spelling a little better if you want Curt's help though.

(First post!) It's a great sport to get into (and I recommend you try), but if you've never tried rock climbing maybe you should give it a go before becoming "devoted"? Anyway, a good place to start would be looking for local clubs and groups I guess. You can make your climbing introduction cheaper by finding friends to teach you rather than buying lessons.

It's easy to be a cheap climber! Just get a box of wine to bribe someone to take you with them and let you borrow their gear! That's what everyone does with me.....

You could do what i did! 1) Get in cozy with the staff. 2) Use them to order ridiculously cheap gear (Staff discount 8^) ). 3) Steal their climbing partners (Who will automatically assume your a stud climber due in no small part to your high performance slippers and lighter than air quick-draws.) 4) Steal their jobs. Works every time

If I were you I'd quit that full time school thing because you're going to anyway once you get a taste. Money shmoney, you won't need too much of that. Get some shoes, harness, chalk bag and beer for your partner(who has rope and gear) and call yourself dialed.

Bouldering requires nothing more than a chalk bag a pair of shoes and some water.

start bouldering. barefoot if u have to. that's how i did it...they won't stick that well but they'll give u a feel for it...after doing that a couple times 80 bucks won't seem that costly...get shoes. boulder in popular spots so you can meet other people. be friendly and express your interest in climbing. go to ur local outdoor store like rei or whatever u guys have in az. talk to the people in the climbing section...sometimes people in the store are very helpful and friendly. crashpads are great to have for bouldering, but expensive...like 90 bucks at the absolute cheapest...maybe you could find one used but if u find a climbing partner who has one, you can mooch and take turns spotting eachother for a bit till u can afford your own. it was easier for me to start because my boyfriend and i started together and he has more money at his disposal...so he just bought everything and i mooched for a bit until i could save up the money for my own gear. you can't really mooch shoes though. sorry.

In reply to: you can't really mooch shoes though. sorry. I mooched shoes for my first few months. :P Getting into climbing is SO much easier with friends who climb. Especially if you have the same size feet.

I was a newbie climber, and then I found the opportunity to get a whole TradRack and now I trad every week, it's great. It's the only reason I don't get really depressed during the snowboarding off season. Bouldering is FUN, but it's not for everyone, my wife hates it. I would recommend finding someone who goes outside a lot, with lots of gear. Climbers are so nice, I'm always inviting newbees to go trading with us, we just set up an achor for them so they can top rop. TO be a newbie tag-along all you need are a pair of shoes, a harness, and a chalk bag. Well, not even a chalk bag. Or a harness for that matter, a lot of people have extra, but you are more likely to be "invited" if you have your own harnes and shoes. Start going right away, find an indoor climbing gym, start meeting people who go. Even post an add at your climbing gym that says when you are available to climb, let them know you're rating 5.6-5.8 (starting out) and I'm sure you'll get lots of calls.
