ran across this on one of my runners recently. I did a search and didnt find much on runner wear and tear. http://www.msprotege.com/...rs/uclap5/retire.jpg Should it be retired? this sling is used primarily for top rope anchors, an autoblock for raps, and anchoring myself to anchors at the top of sport climbs to set up rap. It is a BD nylon 24" runner. Been used in this way for about 6 months

I have a 48" BD sling that had the exact same thing happen. I tied an overhand knot around the damaged spot so it doesn't see any tension and now it only gets used marginally.

Cut it "there" and tie it off with a ring bend. Still good for 18 KN...

i'll probably just retire it, id rather spend the $5 for a new one than put up with an iffy runner or bulky tied runner of an abnormal length.

ehh...I'd say if you have to ask that question, then the answer is yes. (after looking at the pic...yes you should retire it. Think about it, could be a great gear sling anyway)

I would have to agree with the previous replies as well. If you are *ever* in doubt about the condition of your equipment and have no means of sending it somewhere to be looked at, retire it. I can bet you would rather spend 5-10 dollars on a new runner than have 20-20 hindsight falling from the rock. Plus buying new gear is always fun!

It's probably a good idea to use it as a gear sling, but you might want to label it. You would hate to use it by mistake, and not realize it until you see it fluttering by.

Is anyone bothered by people declaring a runner unsafe, and then asking if they can use it? Just a thought.

What would happen, worst case scenario, if you fell and it happened to fail? Let that guide you.

In reply to: Is anyone bothered by people declaring a runner unsafe, and then asking if they can use it? Just a thought. Definitely. Scenario 1: They are telling you it is unsafe because they want it, in which case they are lying to you. Scenario 2: They really do think it is nearing retirement but would risk their life on it. Either way is bad, however I would prefer the 1st over the 2nd. Although I have a few horrible runners I use to keep Nalgene bottles in my pack. I also use them to keep my gear clipped on so it does not go everywhere in my pack, I would never actually climb with those runners though. But they can keep you more organized, in which case it is OK to give up the runner or use it yourself.

honestly, i think you'd be fine using it at the top of sport routes to go straight-in to clean it. i'm sure it's just fine for body weight, as for falling force i.e. kN, i'd stray away from that.

When in doubt, chuck it. If you use junk runners for other applications, such as gear slings, I usually wrap them with on or two rings of yellow tape just so I never have any confusion. ~Stoney
