I hate to throw away my old gear, even the stuff I won't climb on anymore, so I thought it would be fun to start a thread that could put some ideas on the table. Here are a few to start: OLD FIGURE EIGHTS - I actually took them out of my rack entirely, due to a higher number of accidents related to the device. Things of the past. I actually took some fishing line and an old caribiner and maid a pretty cool wind chime. It sounds GREAT, and it's hanging from a bolt I attached to my facia on the back patio. I LOVE IT! Here is a picture of the contraption: http://www.rockclimbing.com/photo/photo_show.php?list_sort=highest_first&list_keyword=&list_category=0&list_filter_user_id=&list_comment_user_id=&list_per_page=25&list_album_id=&list_CountryStateID=&list_AreaID=&list_SectionID=&list_mode=my&list_period=None&list_start=29&id=61500 (Figure 8 Chime) OLD ROPES - plenty of obvious uses here... tow lines, rope climbs, tree swings, etc. But how about this: A Rope Pyramid! One pole in the middle, with several main lines staked to the ground, then tie lines in between them in your own creative spiderweb style pattern. OLD HARNESSES - I have no idea... Anyway, what else??! UPDATE, October 2, 2005: We've finally got all 101 ideas! Here is a link to the results: http://www.buenavistaclimbingclub.com/101Gear.htm, and a poll to rank the ideas for popularity. We'd like your input and feed back, so we have created this list from the online forum so you can vote on your favorite ideas, so that we may eventually rank all 101 items. It doesn't matter if you vote for one or all of them. Just vote, and we'll do the counting. Obviously not every idea made the list, and some of the ideas may seam a little trivial. So at the bottom of the page is a box for you to enter your feedback and/or suggestions. Have fun, and thanks for all the input!! Update, October 6, 2005 So far, Wind Chimes and Rope Hammocks (items 1 & 10) are tied for first, but we need more VOTES! Keep 'em coming! Update, October 11, 2005 Okay, we have a few votes, but we need more... otherwise it looks like a PIPE is going to be the number one use of old gear... What does that do for our reputation, huh? Okay, as of January 8th, 2006, these are the top 10 from the list: 3. Rope Rugs 10. Rope hammocks 101. Nearly any piece of old climbing gear can be turned in to a bottle opener. 1. Figure 8 Wind Chime/Gear Wind chimes 65. Hanging bunk beds from old portaledges, or with rope, biners, and boards 30. Daisy chains and caribiners for a dog leash 47. Make a slack line with old biners (for the pulley system) and webbing 89. Make nothing out of your old gear. In other words, Weld/melt your gear together and sell it for thousands at a modern art museum in New York 98. Use a creative combination of climbing gear… (Ice axe, big bro, ascenders, etc.) to make a “pipe.” (a.k.a. “paraphernalia” - This has probably been done a lot!) 8. Christmas tree ornaments! Of course, a few of them are tied, and the last one (8.) is actually one of many tied for number ten. (I just picked it alphabetically.) So, keep on voting, and eventually we'll have to edit the ones that nobody seems to like! I'll post those next...

Hey, remember the guy who used cams for boat anchors? He was boating in a place with lot of rock instead of a shore line and wanted old and damaged cams cheap so he could tie to the rock without using traditional boating methods (like finsing a huge boulder to wrap the rope around).

An earlier post, http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=835316#835316 talked about making throw rugs from old ropes. There was a post listing this web site http://www.roperugs.com/ as a resource for rope rugs.

Give the gear to some young poor high school or college kid with promise as a rock climber. He/she will treasure the gear and it will be put to good use. Keep a few pieces for sentimental value and for conversation pieces while climbing (like my old U stem Camalots). Mike

Okay, did I mention the ideas don't have to be practical? Let's have some fun here! How about a hangman's noose? Or soak it in molasses (?!) and give it to a cowboy for ropin' calves! That's numbers 15 and 16... at least 85 to go!

I hacksawed my old Figure 8 in half to use the loops as rap rings. The first one is atop some Adirondack ice route. The second awaits a more obscure fate. Old slings often live in the car for towing. Figures, the only time I had to tow someone I didn't have any old slings and sacrificed some current gear.

a few weeks ago my sister and I found some stray horses. Having nothing in my truck but climbing gear...well. I had something similar to a slack line between two trees and biners to webbing allowed the three horses to each move freely in thier respective areas of the slack line.

I've definately got a rope rug. I set up a volleyball net and rigged with bootied biners I give away hexes to those who might actually want them. I've planted flowers in old shoes (I'm not home enough to water, and they died) Not climbing but I have a broken bicycle fork (carbon fiber) that I made a lamp out of.

Why hasn´t anyone mentioned keychains? Pretty much anything can be turned into a key chain. Hell, if I could fit her into my pocket, I´d turn my belayer into a keychain.

I have a dropped/retired quickdraw hanging from the rearview mirror in my jeep A retired cam i gave to a friend ... its his first piece in his rack (he knows he cant use it so it hangs over his bedroom doorway to remind him to make some money and buy some cams) Retired/bootied gear is always good for bailing if you need to use it (when in doubt, run it out folks. dont bail!) I use and old 12mm rope for towing while 4wheelin Making a rope swing/chair hammock from an 11mm rope Hexs have no real use and neither do pitons... im still dreaming one up tho

Sweet, we have a solid 25 good ideas. I'll add a couple more cheesy ones... I've been compiling the list into a word file so that everyone can have the list with them once it's complete, in case of emergencies... well, at least once we have 101 things to do... Maybe we should go for 1001?! I was thinking of a couple more ideas... -It would be cool to somehow stitch a pair of chaps on to an old harness... then what? Then go for some serious off-width/chimney action... Knee bars with chaps? What do you think? -I'm still trying to dream up a usefull idea for hexes... other than midievil style weapons... ??? I have a nice curved set that I NEVER use... I'll think of something...

Okay, here is the list so far in case you wish to elaborate, or make sure you don't duplicate.... 1. Figure 8 Wind Chime/Gear Windchimes 2. Rope Pyramid/Playground novelty 3. Rope Rugs 4. Boat anchors (in canyon rivers) with old cams 5. Tow lines (Static ONLY!) 6. Rope tree swings 7. Knotted ropes for training 8. Christmas tree ornaments! 9. Chairs from old harness and/or ropes 10. Cowboy’s rope for Ropin’ Calves 16. Earrings! 17. Safety lines, painting the house! 18. Necklace from old cam pieces 19. Fig. 8’s for rap rings (caution!) 20. Rear view mirror! 21. i use an old "SMC" brand standard oval carabiner for my keys... works alot better than those crappy non-climbing biners you can get anywhere.

okay i know wind chime is a repeat, but i think hexes (especially the large ones) would do great on a chime. i have a tendency to call them cow bells anyway. on of the coolest things i have seen made out of gear was a mobile for a child's room. i have no pictures, but my friend took some wire clothes hangers and cord and hung everything from them. ice screws, pitons, cams, carabiners, nuts, and a few more things. the kid is almost two and can identify almost all the stuff. i guess it doesn't have to be in a kids room if you are artistic.
