A bunch of us Floridians just took a trip up to lost wall. A word to the fuel efficient, the road access to lost wall and rock town is pretty rough. This is one place that a large truck or SUV is necessary. It is possible to get a car up, but I wouldn't recommend it, unless you just don't care that much about your car. Don't be fooled by the first half mile or so, once you start up the switchbacks the road is water-damaged, rutted, rocky, washboard, and potholed. Additionally, the steep grade makes it difficult to drive slowly enough to avoid obstacles without burning up the clutch. In short, if you own a car, find a friend with an off-road vehicle, and ride with him/her.

A message from Tim Gilbreath, Ranger at Pigeon Mtn. (Rocktown & Lost Wall).

In April and /or May we have plans for a major road repair to Rocky Lane (East). Would you announce to all in your network that if they are planning a trip to Pigeon Mtn during this period please call ahead (706-295-6041) to get the details on the road closure.

Because of the major reconstruction, the road will be gated at various intervals or may remain gated for the entire length of the project.

Thanks for your help.

Thank god they are finaly going to repair that road, its awful! I've seen some small compact cars at the top of that mountain and i've always wondered how they managed to make it up mess of a road without ruining thier cars. I drive a small saturn 5 speed and I know making it up that road would mean certain death to my car, bring an SUV until the road is repaired.

One of my friends in the Atlanta Climbing Club has been talking/emailing with the ranger up there, and he said to get the word out that the road is still being worked on. He said that it was scheduled to be done in June, but now it looks like it will be mid-July before it is complete. The ranger said the main road up is totally closed due to all the heavy equipment on the road, and that the back way up is in very bad shape, so his advice was to not come up there at all right now.

My buddy in ACC says the ranger is going to update him when things are back to normal. I'll update this next month if someone else doesn't do so first.

Updated information -- word is that the road to Lost Wall is completed, but is still under construction to Rocktown. I'm going up there this weekend and will report back on the status for anyone who's interested.

I was up there a few weeks ago, the road is nowhere near as bad as it was before they began repairs on it. The so called "rough parts" now would have been the least of your worries before the road was repaired. Though you may bottom out a few times, a regular car shouldn't have too much trouble getting to Rocktown or Lost Wall.

We were at Lost Wall yesterday and the road is in fact in very good shape. No bottoming out to worry about. I was never there when the road was at its worst, but I've seen pictures, and this is a real improvement.

Unfortunately, it's not paved, and I don't know if that's in the plan. It would be a shame to see all that great work go to waste with a big rainstorm washing it away.

I'm pretty sure it's sandstone. Definitely not granite.
