Part of the trail on the ridge leading to the crag at Clear Creak is on private land. The land owners are allowing their land to be logged and as of the morning of October 3 a good part of the trail leading to South Clear has been destroyed. This is obviously a terrible thing and I don't know how much more of the trail is in danger. So far North and Middle Clear are still accessable. Its a long hike to South Clear though if you follow the less worn trail at the bottom of the cliffs. But right now to reach South Clear you can either hike along the bottom of the cliffs from North or Middle Clear or you can bushwack your way from the ridge down to South Clear. It is disheartening to hear those logging machines in what was such a peaceful place!

hey, i've been down the normal south clear trail twice this week. You can still go down the original. No bushwacking is needed. The climbing coalition convinced the owner to stop the cutting about twenty feet from the trail. peace

Dude... This is TERRIBLE... I don't mean to sound like a tree hugging hippy, but I seriously find this devistating... My favorite part of the trail is now a clearcut nothing... its dead... they freakin cut down elbow tree and didnt even use it... when I went by it was just laying there... helplessly DEAD... I loved that tree... I would always get so excited when I walked by it... and I always patted it for good luck.... now it is gone!!

Thanks to whoever put the fluorescent tape blazes at the entry and exit points on the clear cut area. They saved us the other night when we hiked out in the dark with no lights.

In reply to: they are supposedly letting it all turn into fields! While it sucks that they clear cut the forest. You can't just "let land turn into fields". Unless they completely clean up all the mess and farm the land or ritualistically Napalm the area, the trees will eventually grow back.

i was told that they were going to continue to bushwack it until it turns into a field. But, they probably really won't do that.

In reply to: is the elbow tree there? somebody should pick it up and save it. NO! I seriously cried when I saw it laying there... I have some pics I will post soon... I took some pics of the clear cut and of elbow tree lying there helpless... it makes me cringe to think of it....

While it is disheartening to see such a beautiful area destroyed, please keep in mind that most of the trail is on private land. We use the trail with the kind permission of the landowners. While South Clear is accessible without the ridge trail, it is much more convenient than the cliff base trail. For those of you that haven't taken the cliff base trail, it more than doubles the walking time. Presumably, we will be able to repair the trail when they are done logging. So please don't mess up our access and cause a problem there and don't let anyone else do it either.
