anyone care to explain "associated press"?

We see BS statistics all the time on TV and magazines, this also has to do with some of collegekid's "information"...

Is that term meant to be taken literally? As in, "some press members that have associations with this company\source"

And how accurate are these sources? It seems like a ton of "information" given this way is completely made up... Are there any general rules to it?

Or am I just completely wrong? :?

Associated Press is the largest international press agency ... nothing more, nothing less.

I worked for them in the late 80's, and whikle the "byline" is lucrative, they don't pay for shit!

I know that the New York Times have articles by the Associated Press as well as Reuters. I don't know what these things are though. If anyone could answer that would be awesome.

I was a photojournalist that worked for AP as a stringer in the Cleveland area. In 1989, I was fortunate enough to have been selected to photograph the World Canoe and Kayak Championships for the Baltimore office. I also received a letter of acceptance to work w/ AP in Tel Aviv, but after long consideration, I declined the move to Israel.

AP is an organization that is built upon a network system that includes affiliate publications and media outlets.

Since UPI (United Press International) disappeared in the 80's, AP was left as the only primary wire service. This means that when something of national or regional interest happens in Skunk Crotch, West Virgina, the local media oulet (if an AP affiliate) has a contractual obligation to submit this information to the AP story bank. AP it turn distributes it to all other affiliates, and retains the copywrite.
