why the watermelon?

If I remember correctly, he was just spouting shit at the campfire one night, in that inimitable way of his, everything was so fucking easy for him, and he just said, "hell, I can do that pile naked with a watermelon tied to my ass". Someone volunteered to provide said melon and a belay, and the next thing you know we were at the Arsenal, and up he went. That was back when the giant blocks at the base were still part of the route.

Which makes me think, when I go, I won't mind a bit if I'm squashed by a 40 ton boulder while naked, on a 12d, with a watermelon tied to my ass.

What do these records have to do with climbing?

Let's get some real records.

How about the most alcohol consumed around a campfire?

Ours was 76 beers, 4 bottles of champagne, 5 bottles of wine, and 3 bottles of assorted hard alcohols (mostly tequila and vodka). 20 people were drinking that night... Camp 4 New Years rocks.

Alex Lowe completed the Grand Traverse in the Tetons in some astonishingly superhuman time--like sub-8 hours!

That's summiting Teewinot, Owen, the Grand, Middle Teton, South Teton, Gilkey Tower, Ice Cream Cone, Spalding, Cloudveil Dome, and Nez Perce. Apparently this record has been broken by Rolando Garibotti.

That's faster than Harrison Ford has flown the Grand Traverse in his helicopter.

This record has since been broken, which is pretty amazing. Rolando Garibotti did the Grand Traverse in 6 hours 40 minutes.

Question about the Longs Peak Triathlon.

I'm interested in BOTH the one way record and the round trip record. I saw the Roger Briggs slide show last night and was inspired.

I'd love to give either (or both) of these records a crack this summer, I'm not really going to freak out and get competitive but the cycling, running, and climbing thing really fits my style.

I found the starting point, 36th and Broadway. My question deals with support.

Can I leave my truck at the trailhead so I can stash my bike? Can I throw a couple full bottles or a camelback in there as well? Or must I do this totally unsupported? ex. Carry all my water, lock my bike, carry the lock, etc?

I know this is splitting hairs, but I'd like to do it in the same style that the record was set. Records should be broken using superior training, not using shortcuts.

It's probably a moot point anyway, I'll be like 5 hours slower.

That averages to less than 4 beers, 1 glass of champagne, 1 glss of wine and a shot of liquor per person on New Years Eve, and you call that a record? Weak

Because I'm relatively young (18), I'll post the records that hit the newsstands in R&I a few months ago:

"Tommy Caldwell frees The Nose and Freerider in a day"

"Michael Reardon on-sight free-soloed 1000 foot 5.12b Romantic Warrior"

It may be common knowledge now, but in 20 years this will be history (and perhaps outdone).
