You never make mistakes? Ever? Climbing is a high risk sport. If you climb enough (and I'm guessing you don't) you will eventually make a mistake that might result in serious badness to you or someone else. I'm guessing that you have not taken a serious look at the consequences of your hobby and are shielding yourself from doing so by putting yourself above making simple mistakes. This is far more dangerous than rapping off the end of your rope.

In reply to: a seasoned (supposedly) colorado guide lowered himself off of his rope, which failed to met the ground by 28 ft, while on a SPORT climbing vacation. What do you mean, "lowered himself"? Either he was rapping or being lowered, yes? And who was it?

In reply to: reformed park ranger What if a ranger friend of yours drove their jeep off the road and crashed into a tree. I'm sure they'd been driving for years (supposedly) but ______ what does SPORT have to do with anything? rapping down either trad, aid, sport is all the same your karma is fucked for life.. just because you're thousands of miles away in alaska doesn't mean the guide doesn't have friends, family, children, climbing partners.. etc that would be deeply affected (and could be reading this thread) again.. you're a bitch. We all fvck up. The lucky ones get away unscathed, and the unlucky ones get hurt or dead. I've been lowered off a climb and hit the ground because the belayer let the rope run though the belay device. By a climber who has been in magazines a few times and has 30 years experience. Nothing bad happened, but it was a shock. I've also seen someone with a fair anmount of experience but still considered a third rate climber notice the rope about to run though the device just in time to correct the problem, before dropping the experienced well known highly skilled climber, who had brought a 50 meter rope to a 60 meter climb (talking round trip here) that he had done many times before. IF climbing were really dangerous, people would be dropping like flies, cause lots of mistakes are made all the time.

couldnt this be prevented simply by tying a knot at the end of your rope? i mean, sure your still in a tough situation, but at least your not dead.

In reply to: in el potrero chico, mexico: a seasoned (supposedly) colorado guide lowered himself off of his rope, which failed to met the ground by 28 ft, while on a SPORT climbing vacation. really, how much easier can sport climbing be? and how much would you pay this guy to teach you to climb? for everyones sake, i hope he didnt make it. Tiffany... so far you've made two posts; both fairly incendiary and out of line. You might want to think about lurking for a while before you post again. You're definitely not off to a good start here.

If you can find out more, please post in a new thread - this one has bad vibes and should be hidden in Community ASAP And see if your friends can find someone named Tiffany, from Girdwood Alaska and introduce her to the victims friends. In reply to: And see if your friends can find someone named Tiffany, from Girdwood Alaska and introduce her to the victims friends. For the record, this Tiffany is from Massachusetts and has good compassion karma points. I may consider changing my first name if further posts like this turn up. I always said that Tiffany is a bitchy cheerleader name anyway, and guesswho might be proof of this! From this day forward I would like to be referred to as: The Climber Formerly Known as Tiffany The lack of empathy in the climbing community can sometimes be too much. Not that this person is even a climber. She just sounds like a jerk!

I am not so keen on vigilante action on someone who made her own mistake of posting evil (possibly under some ... influencing substance). If she can recognize her mistake and apologize, bad karma may some day be made right. The internet has the potential to make a moments mistake (a grievous one, in this case) a life-long Sword of Damocles. And it shouldn't. Brian (do not read this as condoning impaired driving. Apples/oranges)

This has happened to guides before. Three years ago it happened at Red Rocks to a guide there. Sadly, accidents happen to the best of us. Whether the OP was in poor taste or not, I don’t think this should be moved to Community. Community is for non-climbing topics, and not a tool for censoring topics that you don’t want on the frontpage.
