Could it be anxiety? I've heard of people having panic attacks in their sleep. But really, you should ask a doctor!

i wouldn't worry too much, it sounds like sleep paralysis (like you thought). wikipedia!: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleep_paralysis. you can get it falling asleep, as well, apparently.

You definitely need to explore what is going on in your life. A year ago, I was making some huge changes and just feeling fearful that things wouldn't work out, which they didn't for about four months. I woke one night to find myself standing in my bed, scratching at the wall and screaming because I was dreaming I was in some room like in an Indiana Jones movie and the walls were closing in and were going to squish me (and that is the first time I know that I acted out a dream). It took me two-three weeks before that anxiety calmed.

It's the opposite of paralysis, but could be linked to the same issues/anxieties. Try this website to look at other's experiences: www.sleepnet.com.

I'd say sleep paralysis too. Though check with a doctor.

This happenned to me as well for about a week straight. Every night, middle of night. I was also sick and on all types of meds (including nighttime cough). A shot of nighttime cough medicine is stronger than a shot of booze!!! It was like I was tripping out...but, I knew the whole time and was able to tell myself that I was OK and I would come out of whatever was going on.

this happens to me pretty frequently too, in the same situation you explained.

I never really thought about it too much, just figured that's what happens to me when I come out of a really deep sleep. Doesn't really seem to happen when I'm sleeping in my bed at night, though. Hmmmm, maybe I should look into this.... :)
