"does this make me look fat?" "no! of course not!"

are those ok? when I ask questions like that I'm just asking if what I'm wearing look bad? I'm asking because I want an honest opinion, not fishing for a compliment.

You may not be fishing for a complement, but if someone answers yes, you'll likely either be annoyed, depressed, or downright angry, and looking to lash out.

Fortunately, since it's a rhetorical question, I don't have to lie to that one. Is the sky blue? Yes. Do I look fat in this? No.

i don't think i'd be annoyed if someone answered "yes" to the "does this make me look fat question" - though my version of that question is usually
"does this shirt look stupid?" or something like that.

plus i don't actually think i'm fat, but it's possible for certain outfits to be less flattering, and i'd like to know. i give people my opinion if they ask for it because i assume they're asking because they want to know, not because they want me to tell them they look awesome when they don't.

Well katie, you don't think you'd be annoyed, but the sooner you realize that society is perched on the brink of female irrationality, you'll understand the poor male's compulsion to lie in this matter.

this might be a dumb question, but really, why do people lie so much?

For the guys - it's all about getting her/your clothes off.

Just knowing is half the battle.

creepy side note that i need to freak out about for a minute...

so i'm doing a favor for a guy at work and working the over night shift ... which i hate doing because the janitor creeps me out. apparently runs his own porn site and has told me i look like a movie star before :?

but so tonight he comes in asking for advice on this girl that he's "fallen hard for" and she doesn't know who he is at all, but she wore white pants today with no underwear (i guess this was at his other day job) ... and what should he do to get her off his mind because he can't figure it out.

i felt compelled to put my down jacket on over my white tube top despite the fact that it's probably 75 degrees in here.

creepy creepy creepy! you don't ask a GIRL for advice on that. eek

If you are alone in the building with this guy while working the "overnight shift," I suggest you start carrying a small handgun--just so we don't have to read something terrible about you in the newspaper.

Curt

That's unlawful harassment, plainly and simply, open and shut, anyway you look at it. And it's a federal law, so it doesn't matter what state you're in. Tell your boss immediately, before you become a statistic.

That may be a little overboard there. First tell the guy that you don't feel comfortable talking about that sort of thing. If you feel that you are so uncomfortable to the point where you can't even approach him hten tell your boss. Some people just come across as creepy. They may be the nicest person on earth but they may have some sort of social faux pas that creeps others out even though they wouldn't hurt a fly. On the other hand the most charming person you will ever meet may turn out to be a serial killer. Give the guy a fair chance and tell him you are uncomfortable with that subject matter and if he persists then go to your superior.

Yeah, but take your ice tools to work that day, just to be on the safe side.

"Do I look fat in this dress?"

"No more than usual, no."

(That's not such a popular answer, I found out.)

Nothing hurts more than a pair of crampons to the balls... believe me, I know!
