I'm just so proud, took my daughter to the gym for the first time last Sat. the only free wall was 5.9 and the guy was like "um, i don't know, this is too hard for a beginner" and she just went up while her friends (my friends' kids) were screaming on 5.5 after this she tried all that she could. 5.10 was easy, 5.11 took a bit more but she finished it too :D. the gym guys said they have never seen anybody do these on a first day. yeah, i know it's just a gym wall and i was shouting directions where to step and hold, etc. but i'm still very proud. actually, I am already worrying what she'll do when she actually begins to climb seriously

sorry didn't mean to be a jerk. as with many on this site I mess around when I'm at work. well then good for her, I hope she doesn't pull any tendons, climbing hard too fast can be dangerous even if you can get up a route don't mean you should.

teach her the history behind modern american climbing...tell her about Royal Robbins, John Bachar, Lynn Hill, John Muir even...Teach her where the YDS and V grades came from. Show her the mountains. Please don't unlease another ignorant musclehead into the overcrowded climbing world. Good luck and all the best!

thanks for the advice - yep, I'll try to avoid becoming a hockey dad, and will teach her as much as I can as for the props question - sure I deserve to be praised - I am her father and take care of her, teach her things, etc. (not only climbing too) cheers all

My advice follows what I saw as a distance runner in high school. Girls are fast when they are 13-15 years old. THen puberty hits them where it really hurts performance: bodyfat, pelvic gurlde angle and alignment, and more hormones than you can shake a stick at. at 8 years old she probably cant weight much and doesnt have much weight to support, but 5.11 for anyone is good. Just dont get her chasing numbers because when she turns 16 or so and her gurly body turns into a womans body, it may change more than she might want it to. Some women are lucky and have a better estrogen to testosterone ratio (amongst other hormones) and their changes are less subtle (although they may not be as curvy if you catch my drift and that can take a toll psychologically as far as attention from the boys). Athletic gurls that change and their performances diminsh have a hard time coping with that aspect also. But in time, patience, and training most women can bounce back to where they were if not surpass their old pre-womanly marks. We men have it very easy, from childhood to adulthood (provided we exercise) we just get bigger and stronger. Then we stop growing and we just get stronger, and stronger. just my .02 cents. Nurture any childs gift, but always let it be THEIR GIFT. Sounds like you are on the right track. best of luck to you and yours. Caesar

In reply to: hopefully there are guys out there who would appreciate my daughter's achievement and will be happy for us - we deserve it Happy for US? WE deserve it? She probably has a great body weight to strenght ratio and happened up a 5.11 her first day. How does that involve you? It's not like you'd been coaching your daughter for months and she finally got her project. I assume you haven't been starving her. How is her getting a 5.11 on her first try the sort of accomplishment that involves you at all? At least you had the presence of mind not to make your self the primary object of the spray. Instead you warmed our hearts with an 8 year old girl, then tried to piggy back on our sympathies. T1, S4

In reply to: Curious to know what the .11 looked like...... slopy, crimpy, overhung ??? it was a straight wall, lots of slopers, some jugs, many little holds, no cracks... my daughter did try some overhung bouldering problems but they proved too much for her when she got to the ceiling. what do you expect, she has no experience and was climbing with tennis shoes and w/o chalk. she enjoyed crashing on the fat pad though

Lots of kudos to your daughter! That's great. I know the feeling well, my 8 yr old has been actively climbing for just over one year now. It's fun and personally rewarding to watch the young ones go at it. As others have said don't focus on the numbers, as well don't even focus on topping out. Have fun, watch carefully for injury risk (pulling tendons and such). My daughter only tops out maybe 50% of time, she will pull past a crux move, lower down and start over or maybe move to another spot. The last day in the gym she would move up a bit and hang by her arms, grab with her feet and take a fall practice. Lately she has been working on her toe and heel hooks and smearing techniques. Don't push it and let her have fun even if its only 5.0 and ten feet up-so what. While she is having fun she is also practicing technique. Also, try some games with the kids. Mine really like to play twister, shark, amputee, and blind on the wall. That technique will play out later and the topping out will happen without thought. And hopefully you climb with her!!

My girlfriend and I were at the local indoor spot last year when we saw this guy with his two young boys~ definite hockey dad. They were getting tired and wanted to get down after climbing up a few feet (as anyone would when they are being forced) but this superdad was screaming at them to keep going. Now our catch phrases are, "this is a fun day" or "I’m going to cancel your birthday party if you don’t climb up" because that’s what he was saying to his kids. What a jerk... please don’t be that dad.

My 8yo climbs at a 5.10 level and he just loves to do it. Have you taken your kid outside to boulder? What kind of injuries have they had? anything major?

For all you assholes yelling TROLL, TROLL, how many kids do you have? There is a big difference between being a troll and being a pround parent. One day, if you're lucky, you'll learn that for yourselves.

I love this site. My 4 month old dog can jump 9 feet off my dock. It helps when I throw the tennis ball in the lake first. He didn't think he could jump at first so I had to pick him up and throw him in. Does anyone else have a dog that can jump. I think I'm going to enter him in the espn outdoor games!

hey zivo, props to your daughter for enjoying her first day at the gym, and to you for being there to enjoy it with her! also props to you for sticking with your OP; it obviously wasn't a troll.
In reply to: hopefully there are guys out there who would appreciate my daughter's achievement and will be happy for us - we deserve it if you deserve our appreciation for what your daughter did, how come we never see chris sharma's or dave graham's parents in climbing mags? i mean, surely since they're sending harder than your daughter, their parents deserve more appreciation...?
