Here's the best recipe I've found so far. I found all the ingredients at my local food CoOp; if you're having a hard time sourcing anything try a health food store. They're pretty damn yummy:

They're called 40/30/30 bars:

1 Cup Brown Rice Syrup
1/2 Cup Natural Peanut Butter
1 Cup Grapenuts
3/4 Cup Protein Poweder
1.5 Tbsp Canola Oil

* Mix brown rice syrup and peanut butter in a double boiler
* add grapenuts and oil
* add protein powder - mix fast!
* Spread in a non-stick pan and put in fridge to set up

This makes about 12 servings and each serving has:
200 calories
20g carbs
15g protein
6.5g fat

I stole this from a user at myfooddiary.com.

All these peanut butter recipes sound yummy but my experience with energy bars have all been bad, I haven't found one yet that I like.
My first experience was whilst doing a 12 hour rogaine, I think it was a power bar but it was a hot day, I opened the packet and it was all warm and melting, I had to suck it out of the packet, I then needed about a litre of water to wash it all down. In that situation where I was racing with the least amount of gear that I could get away with, drinking nearly all my water just to wash it down wasn't good.
Has anyone tried the syrup style energy things (can't remember names) they come in little sealed satchel.

These are similar to the recipe posted above. I've made them a few times, and I think they are pretty tasty. You can make them better by adding some chocolate. Spread them out in the pan, as described in the directions. Then melt some chocolate chips in a double boiler, and pour the chocolate to make a thin, even coat over the bars. Refridgerate for a bit, then cut into squares / rectangles / funny animal shapes. Wrap in foil. If you keep them in the freezer, they last forever. In a pinch once I ate one that had been stuffed in my backpack for 3 months with no refrideration. No ill effects. That was a sans chocolate one.

Syrup energy things: Do you mean GU? There are several similar brands. They are almost certain to make you hurl.

tested the ones that I posted earlier yesterday, was an 80 degrees day and the bag the were in was in the sun. Although they got a little gooy, it wasn't bad, and still tasted great. They are a more moist than cliff bars so you don't need a gallon of water to wash them down, and taste better to. Cost was about $0.65 per bar.
oh ya I almost forgot, used Nutella instead of PB, so you get chocolate and Hazelnut, yumm

Great thread.

Nutella + Ritz crackers. I had initially forgotten about Nutella....it is some truly good shit.

Anyone had the Snickers "Marathon" power bars? They taste GREAT, but I know they're trading off taste for nutritional value. I think these are pretty much sugar, with some sugar on top, mixed half and half with........sugar. And chocolate. Not much different than the candy bar.

LOL ---> If you haven't read the post about Homer Simpson's heart attack...go back one page it's worth it.

In reply to:
Pop Tarts were the World's first energy bars--and still taste better than the competition.

Curt

And!

Fig Newtons.

(predate Poptarts)

Nutritionaly identical to "energy bars" better tasteing and still eatible at low temps without dental damage.

My favorite though are Molasses cookies with rasins from my Grandma's recipie.
