OK... up front... I acknowledge being a gear whore. Bought a rope off ebay described as "used 4 times... great condition". Received yesterday. Find out it is 13+ years old. My first, and likely last, climbing purchase off ebay. My question is: do I weave it into a chair frame and use as outdoor furniture? do I donate to goodwill and hope I never read about the climbing death of some homeless fellow due to rope failure? Do I burn it and then join GHA (Gear Whore Anonymous)? Do I give to an annoying acquaintance to use for 70 lb. boy scouts (with signed waivers, of course)? Do I set up a pulley from a tall tree and let my kids use it, after, of course, a few test runs from the neighbors? Please give me your ideas.

I imagine you have the sellers address. Want a good use for the rope? Go to his house, and hang him with it.

In reply to: Bought a rope off ebay described as "used 4 times... great condition". Received yesterday. Find out it is 13+ years old. I hope you didn't pay too much for it. Buying used gear from people you know can be sketchy. A friend of mine buys tons of stuff used over the Internet, I think he has been pretty lucky so far. If its only been used 4 times and wasn't exposed to chemicals it should still be plenty strong to make a swing for the kids. Some people make rugs out of their old ropes. I still need to get around to covering our cat's scratching post with one of my old ropes. You can tow your car out of the ditch with it.

Personally, buying gear on eBay is something that I would only do in certain circumstances. I would never buy things like ropes, harnesses, webbing, or shoes. I would buy carabiners, wired stoppers, hexes, etc. I'd only buy cams if they were advertised as new, and only after doing thorough research on the seller. But that's just me. Steve

I'd be pounding the keys to get my money back from that seller. "used 4 times" implies a relatively new rope. 13 years old is not new regardless of how little it was used. The seller misrepresented the condition of the rope. Ebay sellers pull this shit all the time. Seriously, you should get you money back. cam out.

Slackline! If you won't I will. Set a permanent line someplace with it. Or the hanging thing, whichever. P.S. a noose is just a grapevine if you didn't know.

pounded the key board.... seller promises to refund upon return. I will be burning tread to the post office! :D BUT... what do I do now to play tug-o-war with the kids? will the wife be pissed I do not braid her a rug from the rope? do I still need gear whore counseling? or does this reprieve let me avoid the gear ho 10 step program? :?

This is a dicey request, but what was the seller's name. I'd like to know so I can steer clear. Selling a 13 yo rope and not clearly saying it is 13 yrs old is shenanigans. If you'd rather not share it, that is okay too.

pfft....a true gear whore would have bought the new 8.9mm Mammut or some other fancy rope. true gear whores starve so that they can have all of the fancy gear available. anyway, as has already been said- dont buy nylon used....thats askin for trouble. weave yourself a nice rug...thats what i'm doing to my first rope this summer.

bought a brand new Metolious Monster 9.8 mil (made by mammut, I believe) last month. does that count? I tend to have (or at least want) the latest gear as well. But I get to looking for a "deals" as well. did not need the friggin rope. but the gear ho in me took over! anyway, guilty on all counts. hopefully others learn from such mistakes :!:
