Katie, hey, yer shoulder hurts! GO SEE A DOCTOR! There could be serious stuff wrong with the musculature, cartilage, or even things like bone spurs, which can be very bad... Have it checked out! Live Free! Play Hard! Climb On! duskerhu

How long have you been on the team? Did you have volleyball over the summer. If you didn't, you could just be working muscles that haven't been worked like that for a while. spyder

we've been in volleyball for about 3 weeks now, but my coach said that i should ice it everyday after practice. and just to let you know, if i can do something about my shoulder without having to pay 60 bucks on a doctors appointment, then i would like to do it. i dont go crying to the doctors everytime i hurt something, i was just asking for advice, or if maybe somebody had the same problem before. but with somewhat bum shoulder and all, we got SECOND IN THE TOURNAMENT WE HAD TODAY!!!! it was fun too. but i have played volleyball for a while now, and this never happened before so it's not just a weird stretching/using thing. so yah. bye

Hey, no prob... you asked for advice, and I gave you some... Go To See A Doctor! And, I doubt YOU'RE shelling out the $60; your parents probably have insurance. And, if they don't, they should maybe think about getting some, what with a volley ball playing rock climbing 15 year old in the house... The other advice you got was from your coach (and I'm a little surprised he didn't tell you to see a doctor). Did you follow his advice??? Is it better? No, well, maybe you need to talk to a professional DOCTOR about it. And lastly, if knowone else here can give you any useful advice, you might try www.volleyball.com cuz I'm sure someone on that site has had the same problem you're having...

60 bucks isn't so much compared to losing full use of your shoulder...better to take a little time off now for recovery than risk more damage...speaking from experience...used to be a distance runner, usually 65-70 miles a week, got tendonitis in my achilles and didn't cut back much- would wake up in the morning, pop some advil, go for a run, and then basically gimp around all day...eventually i got calcification in the tendon where it tried to heal itself, and as a result have almost no flexibility in one foot, and any kind of hard landing on my heel hurts like h@ll- bone doesn't compress or absorb shock well...bottom line is your health is not something you want to scrimp on... Don't play with your muscles. I did it. I overdid it. Now I have knee problems. GO SEE A DOCTOR! Just as others have told ya. Don't ignore. 60 bucks with insurance? Ha, ha. It's less then without insurance around here!

geeez, i feel like my dad. lol. i was in track once and i was in a hurdle race, i did something in my back, i was told that i pinched a nerve and so i couldnt run for a while, so i rested all summer, and it just came back the next year. it sucked, but i lived with it. i will just stick with the icing thing, unless it gets worse. i dont want to take time off, that would just be lame. the season just started a couple weeks ago, so i bet you people know how i feel

OK, my personal experience, FWIW. In HS I played football, the coach didn't have time for whiners so even though my knee hurt like hell I played all season. End of season I got a free surgery for a bone chip under a tendon that wore a grove in my bone. I now have a groovy plastic kneecap which can predict cold weather. It hurts! Now for your situation, you're an athlete, make sure everything is where it should be, no dislocations, no tendons or ligaments making funny noises or movements. If so stop and see a doctor. If not it's probably temporary over use. Keep doing the ice thing and keep the whole area limber. Counter stretch the areas around the hurt. If you can find someone, maybe a trainer, to give a good massage before you ice. It should hurt less as the season goes on. And next year practice some before the season starts. Oh and for pinched nerves see a Chiropracter. It's amazing what a couple adjustment can do for it. Good Luck and take care of yourself.

Stop ignoring. I had to take 6 months of no climbing, no basketball, no skiing, no nothing for my ignoring. Stop ignoring and see a doctor. Would rather be out of volleyball then have pernment shoulder problems? I know giving up volleyball might be hard but it's the right think to do! Fawn

Climber_Chick, I know this isn't what you want to hear, but go to a doctor. I know the last thing you want to do is think about taking time off from the sport you love. You've had shoulder pain continually for three weeks. That's really beyond the norm of sore for a day or two from a really intense workout. By keeping going, you may be taking more time off than you think in the long run. Injuries to tendons, for instance, make them more likely to reinjure. The more often you injure them the weaker they get and more likely they are to reinjure worse the next time. This is my experience and what I'm still struggling with 15 years after my first ankle sprain. And it's messing up my climbing. Now, I'm not saying that's what you've got. You've told us you've got pain, where it is generally, and what you do that produces that pain. Someone here might have a similar experience, pain when serving a volleyball, but the actual injury might be different. Knowing whether it's muscles or tendons or whatever will let you know how to best treat it. Not even a doctor would tell you for certain what that is based on not even seeing you in person. And, look at it this way. You don't really know what's going on. So, your doctor may just tell you how much of a workout to do or what exercises to avoid and still keep you in the game. See a sports medicine specialist if you want. They can be more sympathetic to how important volleyball is to you and give you a proper treatment to get you back to top performance. Please do check it out.
