Equating compassion with education is pure elitism. When people say "educated" they ALWAYS mean one thing....."I spent money on a degree, therefore, I dictate what education is and what it isn't".

Just because you went to school doesn't mean that you KNOW ANYTHING. It means that you sat somewhere taking notes from someone else rather than directly engaging the world yourself.........

Nope, I wasn't talking about a longer education (formal schooling, unversity degree, yada, yada, yada), I was talking about opening a mind to realize that humans are merely part of an overall integrated system (systems theory) and that humans who realise this would naturally gravitate towards compassion.... or something like that.

The only people whom I've ever encountered the "animals were PUT on this planet for our use" are religious types. Just as religion is keeping humankind in the dark ages politically (wars), it is equally keeping compassion at bay due to the mindset that everything on earth is here for us to use and abuse.

And, I like wine too.

I don't think animals were put here just to serve humans, but I do think we're superior enough beings that when it comes down to life or death (or serious injury) the human should come out on top.

Well said. It seems that some folks think that if someone loves animals that they do so at the expense of humans. On the contrary, it is easy to be both an animal lover (not beastiality... usually) and a human lover (not considered beastiality unless she's fugly).

Dude, love the towelly pic!

My friend stops in the middle of the road. Mind you we just hit a dear, after cresting the hill. I suggest that he get off the road entirely, in case another car or SUV should crest the hill hitting us.

We immediately find the dear with crushed rear hip and legs struggling in the ditch. As an archery hunter I'm no stranger to handling wounded animals. They can be quite dangerous. To let an animal suffer and die in the ditch of dehydration and/or starvation is just inhumane. I did the only logical thing and ended the animals life.

It is not something one takes pleasure from. The animal was dead the moment it was hit, that fact had just not caught up to it yet.

I don't agree with those recommending eating the deer for several reasons: Since it was hit by a car most of the meet was probably ruined.
Secondly the adrenaline surge in a situation like that gives the meat a bad taste.
Thirdly, the game warden / High way patrol must be contacted if you are going to consume the animal.

You've got enough to deal with without all that hassle. Just leave it for mother nature to take care of.

Ken, your friend killing "DEAR" must be hell on your relationship. I rememebr to keep my wife away from him.

This is the kind of ignorant shit that leads to tract housing, habitat destruction, deforestation, and people voting for Bush. If animals were put here for our use, tell me where you live, and I'll come eat your cat.

Obviously you are a nature lover and feel you are part of the NATURAL world.
You should take comfort and find joy in the part you played in evolution.

You made the herd stronger by thinning out the slow and stupid! Rejoice

Senseless death always sucks.

I'm a meat eater. That is no way for a deer to die.

Rather, it shold go with its neck clenched tightly in the jaws of a mountain lion.

Or it should break a leg and starve to death.

Or freeze to death one winter evening when it can't make it through yet another sleet storm.

Or be consumed by parasites living in its gut.

Dayum, it ain't pretty no matter how you cut it. Nature is core.

Don't you just love it when people give advice and criticism when they have no clue as to what is what. I dare any one of you to eat a road killed deer. Bloodshot meat isn't fit but for dogs. There could be some that would be good for consumption but it is likely around the eyes or mouth. Deer die everyday and are born at a rate proportionate to their habitat so quit whining about what happens thousands of times every day and drive my insurance rates up with getting your car repaired and get on with what I come to this website for, Climbing.
Do you even climb?

It seems rather obvious that you shouldn't have read a thread titled "Wildlife right away, right to live"

Duh, quit whining yourself.

On a lighter note: Using the adjective "core" is core.

Now that's some funny innit?

Yes, I believe that everyone who suggested this course of action was completely and utterly serious. Hint, hint.

Bob,

I've ate road kill deer. It was prepared as a stew. Some of the meat is edible, just depends on how hard and where it was hit.
