Spent a couple of summer/fall seasons climbing further out from Trinidad than that. Have you been down to Sugarite canyon in New Mexico. Not that far away, and all the basalt you could want, with very few visitors. One contact in the area is Thom Reid, climbing and doing construction there for about 30 years. His company is Kingdom Construction in Trinidad, and his email is dechristo@yahoo.com. Tell him Mike Gray\ Ronin recommended ya... he'll either slam the door and set the dogs on ya, or show ya some great crags, depending on where he is in coffee and nicotine consumption for the day. If you can't reach him, then try heading further and further from town on... what is that, Highway 12? Towards Stonewall, for instance.....
