hi, i´m about to buy a new rope, i would like to know about the 9.8mm disadvantages, can anybody help me with that?... you know for example the endurance before it wears away, top-rope climbing and other stuff...

9.7-8 is my favorite diameter range, but only for leading. I prefer to keep a second rope around to beat on. Like, if I have a non-climbing friend coming to town who wants to try it out, I set up a thicker rope and let 'er rip.

many other factors affect the life of the rope besides the diameter. i had an edelweiss 9.8 that stood up to significantly more abuse than my beal 10.2.

other stuff like..... towing a truck?

Death? wearing out and not having the cash to buy a new cord. Crap for handling. I only climb on 11mm rigs, just kidding geez, sometimes I do though. I figure if I can't climb a route with a that rope could I really do it with a 9.8mm? Probably not. Light and trim is the new trend though.
