I just watched Masters of stone V and I really really want to try some jumps similar to Osman. When I say similar though, I mean much smaller. I saw one of his jumps where he had it hooked up to two trees. I was wondering if anyone knew where I could find information on the rigging he used for his jumps. I know that there could very possibly be people on here that actually knew Dan or knew the way he set things up. I figure it would be a fun thing to do on a rest day to spend some time setting up a small 20 foot jump between two trees.

Hi, use the search on this site, also check supertopo.com there are a couple of topics about his there as well. Honestly there is not much actual rigging information to be found on the net. People are not really interested in sharing the info, because they don't want to be responsible for your death. Figure out the forces, over build your anchors, and wear a chest harness if you care about your back.

Like someone said before any sane person wouldn't explain how to do the rigging on the net because some idiot would go out and try it and end up going splat because he/she set it up wrong. Hey gandalf UGA is going down...War Eagle

In reply to: In reply to: he died jumping, didn't he? No, he died landing. I wish i could rate today.... Very true. My advice: don't fucking do it. Do something safe...like bungee jump or skydive.

Before this gets out of control, his daughter has been known to come on this site. I'm not saying don't discuss what he may have done wrong, just keep it civilized.

My advise, don't do it unless you are extremely sure about what your doing..... When I was about 16 a friend and I watched that video and we were totally fascinated! After a few beers we decided that we would HAVE to try it... so we searched the highest bridge in our town... we jumped a few times and we got better and better, until we were swinging just about two feet above the ground... But once I was laying back a bit to much. After that jump my back had hurt a good week.... So I guess it's not worth it.... go bungee jumping or even better: climbing cheers

If you're really serious about this type of energy I'd recommend you go to a skydiving center and do a jump or two. If you still like it, then learn enough to base jump. From my perspective the gear they use is better suited to that realm than trying to segue into it with climbing gear.

In reply to: After a few beers we decided that we would HAVE to try it... Yes, as your story says, even though it very much sounds like a good idea at the time, along with drinking-and-climbing, drinking-and-driving, drinking-and-skiing and drinking-and-surfing, drinking-and-rope-jumping is actually not a good idea  (as opposed to drinking-and-posting, which I am doing right now, and has only gotten me in trouble.......a few times 8^) )

In reply to: From my perspective the gear they use is better suited to that realm than trying to segue into it with climbing gear. Exactly. They make PPE designed for jumping off of high things. Rock climbing PPE isn't it. There's a reason gear manufacturers always say not to use their equipment in ways other than those documented with the gear. Dan Osman ignored this, and he's dead. Simple enough. If you want to freefall, bungee jump or skydive.

well it wasn't the equipment that failed i don't think. I think what happened was his jump rope somehow wrapped aroung the rope he used to climb backup after the jump and when he did the jump the friction of the two ropes cut/melted through the rope he was jumping on if that made any sense.

We've been doing jumps off a bridge using a similar system. We're not stringing the cable across the top, but rather tieing directly to the bridge and penduluming. We're using two ropes. Both of them are tied to our harness, one of them has a gri-gri already attached. After jumping (its best to be tied in direct instead of having rope hang below), throw the ascender on and ascend back up the rope. Voila. Its good to have a second rope, incase the gri-gri cuts the first rope. -Danno

Well, of course we use a dynamic line, and jump a long ways....I thought so at first too, so we did almost 100 percent pendulums, but then we started pushing it higher and higher and less pendulum. Let me see if I can dig up a link to a photo.
