I have a technique for doing this without making a terrible mess, but I'm wondering if there are better ways that people use, so as not to spill half of their chalk on the ground?? Thanks!

Why not start out by telling your method? I use a chalk ball myself.

Sorry. Here's the way:

Rinse out a 20 oz Gatorade bottle really well and let it dry. Cut the bottom off of the bottle. Holding the bottle upside down, open the chalkball and sinch the cord around the bottle's mouth. Dump loose chalk into the open end, and pack it down into the ball with a 1 1/4" dowel (wooden clothes rod from a closet). When ball is stretched full, carefull remove it from the bottle and re-seal.

I've found this works pretty well, but does make a bit of a mess. I figured other people might have better ideas.

Or, maybe I should patent this method and start making and selling "chalk ball repacking kits" - made from 100% recycled material! Right.

How about spending the extra four or five bucks, saving the mess, and buy a new chalk ball?

Just a thought!

I'm a junkie, so I have to do this a lot. But I never have much trouble with making a mess. I just open up the ball and put it in my chalk bag, then I carefully pour the chalk from the plastic bag into the ball. Some (not much) spills into my chalk bag, but I want that. Then I pack it down and repeat until full.
I like a little extra chalk in my bag for those times when the chalk ball isn't enough.

Waxman,

I've done that. It gets expensive. My current ball is on its 3rd or 4th refill from the same $6 container of loose chalk, with plenty left. So $6 versus $16+. It's a no brainer.

Anyone else have any good methods?

Since I generally buy chalk in block form, I usually put a few pieces of the chalk into a ziplock bag then smash it with something hard such as a rock or spoon until you get the consistency I want. The ziplock bag keeps chalk from going everywhere while smashing it. Once smashed I carefully empty the ziplock bag onto a piece of paper. By folding the paper in half I create a makeshift funnel that I can easily pour into the chalk bag.

DJ

edit: sorry meant to say pour into chalk ball not chalk bag

two people have been talking about refilling chalk BAGS, when this thread is concerned with the much more difficult task of refilling a chalk BALL. big difference. Anyway, i did it the messy, bad way...funnel, a pencil, and lots of chalk...my chalk bag is no where near to as full as i want it to be.

Does the method involving chunks of chalk work well? It seems like you'd be able to get more chalk stuffed in that way...do the chunks break apart well?

Use a spoon to scoop the chalk into the ball. Then compact the chalk with the back of the spoon and repeat until full. Never any mess unless you sneeze or are a fumble nuts.

I don't make a mess because I perform the whole operation while my chalk ball is in my chalk bag..... imagine that...

No, my chalk ball will never be as big as before..... but then again, I don't like it crammed to the hilt.

The hard part is getting the little string loose....

I use Aluminum Foil, to catch all the loose chalk. I have the Metolius super chalk that comes in the bag. I get my chalk ball out open it up put down some foil and, pore chalk into the ball from the plastic bag to the best of my ability. Then the rest that didn't make it in the bag I get the foil with the chalk on it and funnel it into the ball. Put the ball back into the chalkbag.

I wait for my climbing partner to turn his back, then I carefully remove all of the chalk from his bag using a siphoning hose.

For those who happen to be cheap bastards, like me, Skip the chalk ball and cut the foot out of a leg of woman's panty hose. If they're used, it's good luck if she's a total babe. Install chalk using one of the above suggestions, tie an overhand knot and Voila!

Peace

Rope tarp on the ground (bottom side up and shaken clean. I play with the ball and refill it by cutting the block with a little saw (1 big chunk) and wrapping the ball back together.

I pour the mess into a baggie and throw the remaindere of the chalk square in there and keep it at home.

When you get a new bag of chalk, put it into an old ketchup or other squeezie bottle and use that to squeeze the chalk into your ball. It eliviates most of the mess and you will have balls o' plenty...of chalk.
