philbox wrote: John, you've just been offered a perfectly reasonable explanation of the whys and wherefores of the lack of embedded images. You have also been thrown a bone that the owners are commited to restoring embedded images. It seems that you will never be satisfied, what is the problem mate. If the auto resizing of pics is solved then we can have our cake and eat it too and enjoy both the embedded images and the video feature. C'mon man work with us here. It won't happen overnight but it will happen. You above all people should understand at least most of the tech speak and the jargon associated with getting things right. I tell ya I hated those huge images associated with the olde site. You know the ones where you would have to scroll half way across the country to see the whole image. Phil, I believe the explanation of the whys and wherefores has been quite solidly proven to be based only on administration preference. As you say, I do understand the technical issues here, and the bandwidth "issue" is a crock and the size issue can be managed with ease. The only issue that's really an issue is that the new owners want things their way. This is perfectly within their right to do, but it WILL drive me and many others away. As for "what is the problem mate" I believe I am entirely justified in having a problem. I've spent almost half a decade at this site contributing in one way or another, and I have loved every moment. Now some guys I've never heard of with a bit of money step up, and can Hilary, disregarding all efforts and contributions she has made over her own years here, because of a private comment she made out of her own love for the site. Then when I speak up in disagreement of that action, they can me too. You're darn right I have a problem with that. You would have a problem as well, sir.

In reply to: How do you limit the initial size you see the picture in the pictures section ( before hitting the "see full size 900 x 1400 whatever" ) ? We use a plug-in that's designed specifically for the Gossamer Links package, the software we're using for the photos section. This plug-in does a variety of things with images being uploaded -- it creates multiple copies of the original at different sizes and attaches them to the particular database record. The forums run on the Gossamer Forum package, for which this plug-in was not designed. It doesn't mean it can't be changed, it just means it's an effort that doesn't just happen with the flip of a switch.
In reply to: In reply to: Hint: it's not just technical... why so shady... just say what the issue is.. ? Nothing is free. We're just thinking twice before writing a check to unleash thousands of golf-club-swinging hamsters in the forums. Yeah, I'm exaggerating for effect. But in the end it really is a decision that will have impacts in the long run, and we're just careful in being smart about it. I will go as far as to say you would too, if you were in my shoes. DDT

Heya all, See Daniel's post in announcements on how to embed images uploaded as attachments as well as images hosted anywhere else on the web. I've also added the these tags to the Markup Help Page Have fun.

Can you post a formula of how to post pics that are hosted on this site ? I was just trying to post a pick of my rack and just can't figure this out. Thanks

Hi Sangiro, Thanks a bunch man. I know this has been a struggle for you and Daniel and I, for one, really appreciate it. I just got finished editing some of my trip reports that have pictures embedded in them and I think they look much better. It was a lot of work. I suppose it's too much to ask for you to automate this process. One thing I WOULD like to ask for is an "image" button (like the "url", b, and u buttons) you have on the post screen. It would make composing faster and cut down on typos. Obviously no hurry on this one. Thanks again, Sangiro. And since I know what a fan of having hampster pictures on the site you are, here's a picture of mine. Best, Kim
