Holy amazing time, Batman! This years fest was absolutely the best fun I've ever had. Great times with true friends, awesome ice, a fun 'hike', plenty of drinking, tons of ice park donations (the rc.com crew really put their money where their mouth was!) and just incredible amounts of laughter all combined to make this year even better than last. Thank you all so much for coming out and for being awesome. Now hopefully CCR_1980 will come save me from this damn airport. So much for standby! Hope you all make it home safely, send me pictures!

Pictures will have to wait a few days till I get them uploaded from the camera to a website, but the stories... those are plentiful. Tuesday night at BT, having a bite with timstich, then catching up with anykineclimb and mr8615 just before we were ready to leave... then meeting lisap and her friends (Chris, Jeff, and ????) as well. Then redpointron, with his front-page picture on Ames -- He's famous, and we can say we knew him when. Wednesday in the park, teaching ice to ccr_1980, sharing ropes with new friends, and swinging those brand new Quarks (and placing brand new Helixes, too.) Catching up with Sharpie, drinking scotch, beer, and a late-evening run to GoldBelt for chili cheese fries. Thursday, more ice, a run to the airport to pick up Taino and my missus, and another plate of Mexican food at BT. More beer, more scotch. Friday, Saturday.... snow, climbing, watching the Colts win (FINALLY!!!!), Orvis Hot Springs, and spending hard earned cash on such things as antique wooden skis, paintings, pants that don't fit, and a $400 collection of T-shirts. Throwing money as maldaly stripped off his clothes, meeting Jim Donini's wife (100% classy lady.... Jim, you are a very lucky man,) and donning a wig for the Hairi party. I think I drank more beer, too. Sunday, a nice drive, getting stuck in the snow (twice,) having to push the truck out of the snow (twice,) taking a long walk the wrong direction (twice), and making plans for next year. And, thankfully, no fights, cops, or broken ankles. Good times, Ouray. Back again soon.

This year was another great year. I got tons of climbing in and had a blast. On saturday I got lucky and got a chance to take an advanced ice clinic with Conrad Anker. My buddy who was suppose to take it had a bum elbow and let me take his spot. I show up and at the North Face tent and was pumped just to get to meet Conrad when a Warren Miller film crew shows up and tells us that they are going to film our Clinic. I had a blast that morning and can't believe that I got to climb with Conrad. I will be the first to sign up next year.

Considering that I'm wearing glasses, the flash might have been reflected and that prevented red-eye. Be assured, I'm at least as demon-possessed as the rest of that lot. Trip report to follow when I have more time; seems like no one here can do my job. I suppose that's a good thing, but it sucks the first day back from vacation. T

I ordinarily do a play-by-play sort of TR, but there’s just too much to cover. I suppose I could tick off a few thoughts, though… In no particular order: Ouray Ice Park = walk up to one of literally hundreds of routes, set up a TR anchor or lead up, and climb 2-3 distinct lines. Break down, walk 10 feet, do it again. Ice “cragging” at its best. Never have I seen the like. A person could get in a season’s worth of climbing here in a few days. Major props to the two guys who run this not-for-profit park, and a hearty thank you to them for their vision. The effects of a higher altitude are huge. I live, work, and play at under 1500 feet; I can go to Sedona, AZ and merely suffer a bit of shortness of breath – but Ouray brought on a throbbing headache that lasted for two days to join that shortness of breath. Definitely something to take into account, next year. Icebreaker clothing doesn’t stink even after three days of wearing it. Don Julio ‘42 is GOOD TEQUILA. Holy fuck. I am not made from Icebreaker clothing. Oy. “Dude, if this happens – don’t touch my ass.” RC.com REPRESENT’N at the live auction, spending large for a worthy cause. Scotch glues your lips together, and makes your mouth taste like you've spent quality time licking an ashtray. Don’t let Reno start talking about politics. Especially at dinner. And most especially, don’t sit between him and whoever else is involved. “I’m here to live, laugh, fuck, and drink liquor.” Speaking of drinking liquor, the El Jefe at Buen will put you on your ass. I still don't know how Sharpie had five. May I never know. Meeting a bunch of internet ice-axe murderers, and confirming that they’re all good people regardless of political lines and other vices. I am pleased and gratified to have met you all: Mr. & Mrs. RedpointRon, ccr1980, Sharpie, anykineclimb, LisaP, 5.4 Warrior, Jason & Christi (Christin?), Kissnbiners, mr8615, Rudy, TimStitch, Mr. & Ms. Reno, and anyone else on here who I met and didn’t realize or whose names I’ve forgotten. Special thanks to Reno, who was instrumental in my being able to make it to the festival this year. Thank you all for making this a trip I will never forget. Only 51 weeks until the next Ouray Ice Festival. Better start planning. ;^) T

iceisnice wrote: YAWN. you guys need to just cut and paste previous years' reports. Sorry if we're boring you. Next time, mebbe you could come to the ice festival, join us, and liven things up a bit? Not exactly. See previous comment about "No cops, fights, or broken bones."
In reply to: didn't anyone DO anything this year? (and no, toproping doesn't count) Redpointron free soloed the Ames Ice Hose wearing Converse Chuck Taylor All Star basketball shoes, and just a fifi hook rather than a pair of ice tools. Sharpie and I did a 45 minute push of the Snake Coulior on Sneffles, then made it back in time to drink 4 bottles of tequila before supper time. Taino led a WI12/M22 R/X route, placing only one screw and an RP in a parallel sided flaring crack. He did use a Screamer on the RP, though, so we're questioning the ethics of his send. The women had a big pillow fight, wearing thongs and bras, then slathered each other in Hersey's Chocolate syrup. We took video, but promised not to share it with anyone that wasn't there. Sucks to be you if you missed it. Black Diamond decided to divest all shares to the RC.com crew that represented so well. While most folks walked away with schwag bags full of t-shirts, stickers, and chalk bags, we've all got triple sets of C4 cams, brand new crampons, and AT ski gear. Other than that, no, we didn't do a thing. (On Friday.)

I'm with you Reno. The ice festival just ain't fun if you're not there. Sold that damn "Got Stump" shirt for $10,000 this year. $7,500 from the crownd in attendence and then Mountain Hardware threw down another $2,500 to round it up. The $ is going to fund an new memorial ice wall for beginners just above the upper brige. There will be room for 12 ropes. Nice, eh? Beginners and kids will now have a place to try it out without having to figure out how to get into the SR without killing themselves. There are also plans to make a nice memorial seating area, maybe with a fire pit. Yeah! Thanks to all who threw down for this. Mal

Hey Reno thanks for keeping your promise about not showing the pillow fight video! This was my first year at the fest and my first time ice climbing. It was amazing! I’m defiantly going back next year. I was blown away at how generous and supportive everyone was. The parties were great and who doesn't love the hot springs! Here is a pic of Reno sporting blue hair and one of Redpoint during a clinic. ~Reese
