Completed my first ever aid solo a few days ago (second time ever on aid too). I was slow as a snail, but constantly evaluated my system for safety and room for improvement. My GriGri was oriented in the upright position, unmodified, connected to the belay loop on my harness with a mallion. I had total confidence in the GriGri (although I did maintain coils of rope with safety knots clipped to a locker on the waist loop of the harness tie-in), since it stayed in the locked position most of the time. I often had to pull slack just before moving up or reach down and release the brake while moving. I'll consider the chest rig with the rope coiled in a backpack next time.
