Experienced ice climber falls to his death

Search and rescue crews say a man was killed when he fell about 200 ft. off a cliff, Sunday morning. The El Paso County Coroner has identified him as Reid Hunt, 32.

Authorities say Hunt and his friend were looking over the edge of an ice waterfall near Old Stage Road, when Hunt lost his footing. Both men were experienced climbers and both were deaf. Hunt was a counselor at the Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind.

"We got here as quickly as we could," said Mel Druelinger, with search and rescue. "We got the best medical and climbing people, experienced climbing people in the field first."

Authorities say the men had safety gear with them but were not wearing it at the time of Hunt's fall.

This is too bad to hear. It is always a bummer when you hear about experienced climbers making mistakes like that. My condolences go out to his friends and family as well.

Yet, he was a lucky one ... going out doing what you love. It is sad, but that is how I want to go ... doing what I love.

My heart goes out to the family.

It would have been a nasty fall, a short 15ft rock/thin ice section followed by, vertical ice for about 120ft. A further fall is possible to the base of the first pitch if he slid down the ice after the second pitch.

PM for location details if you wish to climb, not appropriate for the discussion.
