Anyone been to the Banff Film Festival this year? I heard they had iceberg climbing. Just curious what it was like.

Its Will Gadd being his usual chippery self and yes he is ice climbing ice bergs. The preview clip I saw was pretty good, but kind of long.

I remember Alex Lowe climbing a berg years ago. Wasn't as much to do about it when he did it.

Mark Twight also did for a Camel cigarette promotion where he was filmed soloing icebergs with director Paul Giraud. He wrote about it in one of his later articles "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes". My recollection of the article was that he did not like it, either from the hollywood element injected or from the safety issues of the instability of the bergs. He went after hearing stories from Alex Lowe being there as well and claiming it to be the best ice in the world (don't believe he was talking of the icebergs, though) so Twight piggy backed on the film crew to get there. Check out the article if you can find it, or if you can borrow or find a copy of "Kiss or Kill" - which is a collection of all his articles up to 2000.

Yeah I saw it last sunday. Basically it was Gadd and some other guy looking for icebergs to climb. Kind of crazy. Basically about how sh1tty the ice was, and how it scared the crab out of them. Placing a tool would result in a huge bang since it was under so much pressure and would crack most of the time.

It was Gadd and Ben Firth. I saw a pre screening of it last fall. Good times talking to Will about it after.... One of the differences in the Alex Lowe stunt and this one is that NONE of these bergs were grounded, and ALL were quite unstable. Apparently he doesn't recommend doing it.... says you might get dead
It's a good show!

I don't think the one I saw with Alex was a grounded berg...could be wrong though.
He did a grounded one when he taught the host of the show to climb.

I was speeking with a buddy the other day, and he said the same thing about the Alex Lowe stunt... I could be wrong I guess. ( just don't tell the Wife that I ever said those words! hehehe)

Alex Lowe was on the cover of Rock and Ice or Climbing magazine soloing an Ice berg and It definitely wasn't grounded.

I think I might actually have the shot of him climbing recorded. It's packed up now bc we're moving. But I'll have to see if I remember when I unpack to grab a screen shot.

I saw the Gadd - Firth Iceberg thing at a CASA fundraiser in Calgary. I'm not sure if it was the full version of the "Berg" adventure, since it included everything from Will growing up to his years on the international competition circuit and of course the completion of his seven-year-old 8 pitch, 5.13a project, "Yamabushi". But the actual "Berg" content was definitely longer then in the documentary I saw of it on TV.
I thought it was entertaining from beginning to end. Will has a very relaxed speaking style and had the crowd in stitches throughout his entire presentation. If I remember correctly, one of the hardest things was finding a local who was willing to bring his boat close enough to these drifting bergs for Will and Ben to jump onto. Not only are they constantly breaking up, but they have a nasty habit of unexpectedly rolling over. It's definitely a dangerous undertaking which one has little or no control over. This became very evident as one of the bergs broke up almost immediately after the climbers had been plucked from it.
