Baby rescued from England's highest mountain
21.02.07

Rescue workers have warned walkers to make sure they are properly prepared after a baby and five-year-old boy had to be rescued from England's highest mountain.

David and Sally Naylor and their two young children were stranded in a ravine 1,800ft up, after getting lost during a walk on Scafell Pike in the Lake District, Cumbria.

The baby, a 14-month-old boy, is believed to be one of the youngest people ever to be rescued from the mountain.

The family had taken a wrong turn on the way down from the summit on Monday evening. After a 10-hour search in darkness, they were found wet, cold and exhausted.

The five-year-old had to be stretchered off the mountain because he was too tired to walk, 15 hours after the family first set off.

Although well-equipped, local rescue workers said they had set off too late in the day. They were trapped as night fell, with clouds, rain and strong winds closing in.

Stephe Cove, chairman of Duddon and Furness Mountain Rescue team, said: "The advice for anybody is make sure of the experience and equipment of the party.

"With children its a decision for the parents to take.

"People make judgments, whether we agree is another matter.

"The thing is with kids you have to be prepared to turn back if they are tired out and cold and miserable.
