Hi- We're thinking about taking our new baby to Skaha in May. Is it kid-friendly- ie, relatively short approaches (she's carrying size, not walking), flat belay areas, bugs? Thanks.

Maybe, The approach is a long, steep set of stairs followed by a 5-45min. walk to all the crags. I've never noticed bugs, some belay areas are better than others. IT can get hotter than hell in May!!!! Even in the shade! thats the #1 danger. With a good baby backpack and a overcast day you should be fine.

You'll find it growing thick along the base of the Fortress and many other climbing wall. Get to know it, identiy it, and avoid it.

no place for a kid... i've seen alot of holds break (and other crap fall off route) compared to places like squish snakes (rattle snakes), the sun and exposure, and most adults have a hard time of not breaking an ankle on the approach...some areas the wind can pick up a bit (afternoons) and that can cause one fussy lil kid....lots of dust no shit, most approaches are though gulleys full of scree and choss not to mention the stairs (and S-to-the-G; thanks for mailing my dvds back aaron!!!!!)

Yup. Just keep junior/juniorette back from the rock fall zone and don't lower through the fixed gear.

If you see Phil "tattooed_climber" on a route in Skaha grab the baby and run for your life! Or face the enevitable one man hold-busting-rock-trundle climbing disaster that is Phil.
In reply to: (and S-to-the-G; thanks for mailing my dvds back aaron!!!!!) thanks for letting me have them for so long.

So... I gather you've had the baby? If so, congratulations! Like everyone else has said, the stairs suck. I think the approach is pretty moderate though, but I have never done it carrying a tot on my back. The other "hazards" at Skaha are the rattlesnakes (can't really see this being a problem though, they don't bug you unless you bug them) and the wasps (ditto). Have fun if you go.

I have more issues with dogs and the class outings with teenagers trundling rocks..........no shit. I bitched out a couple for throwing rocks off the cliffs. the teacher escorted them out.

Watch the heat and climb in shady areas. Doctor's wall has a lot of shade at the base, sun on the routes and lots of the steep stuff you guys will want to climb. 30 min approch from the parking lot.
