BOULDER, Colo. -- A man fell 30 to 40 feet from a Boulder flatiron late Monday afternoon and was killed, the Boulder County Sheriff's Office said.

The man's climbing partner said she immediately called 911 after the man fell. Search and rescue crews have determined that the man died at the scene after falling 30 to 40 feet and landing on his head, suffering massive head trauma.

The woman told the Boulder Sheriff's Office that she and the man were climbing together on the second flatiron when they separated from each other. She said about 10 minutes later she heard a loud noise and found that the man had fallen.

The climbers did not have any climbing equipment with them, said Sgt. Kevin Parker of the Boulder County Sheriff's Office.

Parker said crews were in the process of recovering his body from the mountain Monday night.

The climber's name has not been released.
