I am in the market for a new rope and i would like some other opinons. I weigh 175lbs and i was told that if i got a 9mm or something of that size the rope would be strechier than bigger ropes. I am looking to lead sport with it and want it to last for the next year. So if some people about the same size could let me know what diameter would be good for my weight that would be cool. thanks.

10.5 will last a long time, but a 9.5 will do. It all depends ... are you planning on hanging a lot? If so, go big.

Diameter of the rope is irrelevant in regards to elongation since all ropes are tested with the same mass/weight. The numbers you should be concerned with if you are worried about stretch are the static and dynamic elongations. Pretty simple, the higher the value the stretchier the rope.

That said, it is likely that a heavier person will wear out a thin rope faster than a lighter person, particularly if the rope is being used to work routes instead of just onsighting and red pointing.

I would say a rope of at least 9.8mm diameter ought to be your choice.

Go with something 10mm or larger. I'm guessing since you plan on doing a lot of sport climbing then you likely be taking more falls on it. Also, the smaller diameter ropes can be a little more difficult to arrest falls if you are not on your game. Just get a burly rope, take care of it, and it'll last.

Static and dynamic elongation is definately something to consider if you have some heafty partners! I find that sport climbing in general seems to be hard on ropes, I'd go for the beefier rope, and let your partner(s) carry it.

There are 3 great deals on Beal ropes now
60m $150 ish
http://www.sierratradingpost.com/Product.aspx?baseno=96527&cdf=TopSeller & 70 m http://www.sierratradingpost.com/Product.aspx?baseno=96528&cdf=TopSeller $179

USE THIS COUPON for 20% off orders of $75 or more 56014 I got the 70m for $140

These are great ropes with pretty low Impact force which was not mentioned. They also had a fall held rating of 10 and both are Golden DRY.

The best deal is:
60m
http://www.backcountryoutlet.com/outlet/BLD0557/large/c5/s34/Beal-Edlinger-II-10.2mm-Rope.html?swatch=BLD0557
Sale Price: $83.97 – $97.96 (Save 30%)

This is also a good rope but is a lower end of the Beal line. I asked my friends about the ratings and also went out to JustRopes.com as they have a lot of information about ropes but the prices can be beat easilly!

Also bought this in the 70m Golden Dry as it was too good to pass up! Now they only have the 60m.
Good luck,
Rick
