I believe the vehicle from Stripes was actually called The Urban Assault Vehicle. Its like Wisconsin; we zip in we zip out!

That vehicle is amazing! Smile

Those unimogs are incredible machines. They will go anywere. You see a lot of them in Germany used by the local city maintenance crews with fully customized machines mounted on them for everything from trash collection thru to grass cutting. They have an awesome off road ability too.

But to digress for a moment...

Not in the states it isn't. Until you're paying nearly 7 bucks a gallon shut your whine hole.

Check out this for a roadtrip vehicle. This is an EX troop carrier. Now owned by a climber and used for climbing!

I was in central australia this past august and was camped beside this very vehicle. looked like a retired couple were driving it around. not sure how much climbing they were doing.

diesel was around $1.50/litre AUD($6/gallon). cost a small fortune to fill that pig up!!

You'd have to be extra rich to use one of those for a road trip cause you'd be hard pressed to beat it very hard unless the cash meant little to you.

and even with all the off-road capability, how hard can you really drive it towing a trailer and will all you stuff aboard (I guess you unhook the trailer and it's got the kitchen in it.

I mean, wouldn't a cush motorhome get just as good a mileage, be more comfortable, cheaper used, and you could just tow a jeep behind it? I'm sure it has it's place but it's not many places

Peace

nice. I think it would be cooler to get one of those old charter buses on ebay for $1500, have a party and take out all the seats, then put in an old couch, bed, and a water tank and heater to get a small kitchen. Put in a generator in the cargo area undermeath to get electricity for fridge and other things. theres already a bathroom in the back of most of them. plus lots of buses are diesel so you could convert it so it uses grease or watever from restaraunts, so you've got free gas. Voila!

An old Toyota 4*4 Chinook Motorhome or a converted Lancruiser, 4Runner, or pickup would be the best alround option IMO. Generally good on Gas, reliable, and very capible whereever you may take it.

Cost... much less than the others posted, including the running cost.

Uh for what most of these set-ups cost, I'd fly whereever in the world I wanted to climb, stay in 4 star hotels, have a filet and Bordeaux every night for dinner when I got back, get a massage in the morning at the spa before setting off again, and rent a 4wd and abuse it mercilessly. And still come out way ahead. But whatever floats your boat....or motorhome Tongue
