what? no more flood? damn, i was just feeling good thinking about my very important role in the days to come

still though, my two arks, i can't help but think that, well, not that i'm trying to tell Noah how to do his job, if he were still around, but uh, yeah, seems like his single hull wooden ark wasn't all that safe. unlike my two arks, which made my ark system redundant, a very important part of SRENE in ark building

I'm not saying that people shouldn't clean up the chalk (local ethics dictate this for me),...

I don't think local ethics have anything to do with it. This isn't the same thing as bolting which is often determined by precedent (e.g. FA) or rock type (abundance of protection or lack there of), it's just something that has become part of climbing.

However, as much as climbers want chalk to help them make the next hard move, they also want:
1) to keep access open
2) to enjoy being outdoors
3) to use ethics that ensure others will experience the route the way they did

In many ways, the over-use of chalk doesn't align with these three collective goals. The reality is that not using chalk, using less chalk, using colored chalk, or using the new eco-balls, are all other possibilities that better align with these goals.

I agree for the most part. Over use of chalk is a problem in many climbing areas, and the use of colored chalk or eco-balls helps with this problem to some degree (I use an eco-ball for everything but the gym). However, I do think that local ethics do play a part in my decision to use and/or back-clean chalk on a particular route. For instance, at the local 40 foot grid-bolted choss pile, the use of chalk abounds (along with glued and chipped holds and other questionable activities). When I'm climbing there, I much less concerned about my "chalk impact" because this is unquestionably a sport climbing crag minutes off the highway. No one comes to this place for a picnic, and no one comes to this place expecting adventure and solitude. Contrasting that, if I happen to be climbing an alpine granite slab high up in the mountains, I'm much more judicious of my chalk use, and much more conscious of leaving discernible marks on the route, because I expect that others will come after me to those places with an eye for adventure and solitude, experiences which, IMHO, can be negatively affected by every hold being covered by chalk dust.

Granted, this is totally a subjective judgement for me, and no hard and fast rule seems to exist in most places. However, let's be honest with ourselves. "Leave No Trace" hasn't really been practised most sport choss piles for a long time, and the white marks left on the rock are usually incomparable to the overall impact that our activities have left on these areas.

Thanks for the pleasant reply. I think we're on the same page. Let me highlight a few more ideas that response brings up.

First, I agree that chalk isn't the biggest trace we leave, but it is often the most visible and because of that it invites further scrutiny. In some cases, people wouldn't get upset about climbing or access except they see the chalk and figure that it's a sign of worse abuses to come.

Second, even though some sport crags are choss (although this hasn't been my experience) I think we still need to practice respect, perhaps even more so in environs that don't induce it.

Finally, the "minutes off the highway" comment only reminded of how easily visible a lot of sport climbing is. In many cases there are climbs that are literally on the road. The last thing I want is that someone's introduction to climbing is the sight of a beautiful wall covered with our white graffiti.

So, the local ethics thing still rings hollow to me. I'd love to see a culture of climbing that embraces low impact and frowns upon gratuitous chalk use. I'd love to see climbing companies pushing this both through products and by sponsoring climbers that make a point of it. Sure, this is all hyper-ideal, but that's not odd for climbers. Most of us value self-reliance, the ability to confront danger, pushing limits, etc. We already embrace ideals, why not this one?

Defecation is the act of excreting waste from the body. If you have a credible source with a definition to the contrary, my apologies.

Climbers like us will forever be an invaluable source of protection for nature. It is good to know that there are other sheperds that will pass down healthy ethics through generations to come.
If ever there is a petition to stop the use of chalk, I hope to see it here.
Now, I will leave this thread...(a little more lively than when I found it), but I'm headed for Flagstone, then Smith Rock, then to catch up with some "ethical" buddies to climb out on the Oregon Coast.
