Nice guide! It's good to know that people still climb down there. I noticed a couple of routes are rated wrong. We always called Reset Button the Bowling Alley its about 11a. Ironcross on the 2nd is about 10b/c. Chock It Up is about 5.7- Hope to see you around, Craig Berkley

Thanks Craig. Manchester Bridge is, to me, one of the great urban climbing oases. I wish that there were more across the country. I will incorporate your comments and republish the .pdf guide - do you wish to be recognized in the credits? Thanks for your input. Without it the guide would be less than accurate and for me, at the very best means a less enjoyable day by climbing the wrong routes and at very worst means that someone gets hurt by getting in over their head. Cheers! Michael Greeby

Hello again Michael. My wife and I are moving a little closer to Richmond (been in Asheville for the last four years) so I hope to come up and hit Manchester occasionally. I agree with you as well; the wall is a great place to work on your skills. It's produced a ton of solid climbers, many whom have left the area, stayed still cranking during the week, or simply retired. There were about a half of dozen of us that developed that area. Heck when I first went there it consisted of about 8 routes. Now there's something like 30+. Most, if not all, were put up on lead with hooks and hand drills. We were all Seneca regulars and 'kept' the tradition (even on the man made). Jamie McGrath and I finished the last of the few thin (reachy) routes... Fem, Exodus, Pulp, Blair Witch. Funny how basically the same shape blocks can create such cool puzzles to climb. Opps you caught me reminiscing... Again thanks again for your effort. Great guide! Hope to see you down there sometime. -Craig

You can set up a top rope for routes on the Main Wall - just be REALLY careful as you will need to lean over the edge, clip the top anchor bolts and then lower your rope. Personally, I find this DANGEROUS and do not recommend you going up there, but people do it all the time - your call - please be careful! In general, the left and center routes are most readily available - I am not sure whether there is easy access to the right side routes from the top. You can access the top of the wall one of two ways - via the main path to the lookout point veering off of the paved path on the right side just before the fence, follow toward the edge and then on the right is a steep dirt path. This path continues to the bottom and the left side of the wall. OR you can go up it from the bottom. As a final note, I do NOT recommend rappelling from the top as the drop in is sketchy. However, once you are done climbing your route and have cleaned your gear, you can rappel using the anchor bolts and then pull your rope at the bottom. Have fun and be careful. Cheers!

there are things behind the wall to anchor off off if you're really concerned with leaning over the edge. Manchester is one of the easiest places to setup anchors. If you are sketched out my setting them up there, this may not be the sport for you. Just be careful and dont be dumb.

Are there chains such that you can clean and lower after you're done TRing? Or do you have to go back up around back to retrieve your draws?

There are no chains. Just two bolts. You can rappel from the bolts or lower from your draws then walk back up and get your draws.
