I was wondering if anyone knew if RC.com or anywhere else has a database for the number of people that climb. I need to do some research on the climbing population this would greatly help.

Sounds like a difficult question. It's not a sport where anyone can really keep track of numbers as there is no real infrastructure. The rock is free and the closest you could get to statistics would be number of climbers at a state/national park.

Also, who is a climber? Is that guy you talked to who went top-roping twice with his friend a climber? I'm sure if you asked him he'd say yes.

why not contact http://www.theuiaa.org and http://www.ifsc-climbing.org?
I would think their member organizations provide some local member information, but maybe not :)
