You don't think 'shit this might hurt!', You think 'shit this is going to hurt', then survivor mode kicks in, things appear to slow down, you seem to have a long time to think, and when you hit you don't feel anything for quite some time but you do hear the inpact and it is loud. My fall was only 80 ft and seemed to take forever (to me) god knows what it must be like to fall for real minutes, and know that it will almost certainly kill you.

ditto that. when i fell from about 12ft or so and decked (the hold broke as i was clipping the first piece), the first thing that came to my mind was "npow im fucked" and then i started thinking about how not to die (there was about 6ft of ledge at the bottom of the route, than about 200ft of talus) or take my belayer for a ride down the talus with me. so i decided to 'aim' for a tree trunk that was at the edge of the ledge. landed on my feet (dont ask me how i managed to control the backward rotation as i dont know) and the balyer had the presence of mind to grab my harness to arrest me just enough so that i was able to stop at the edge of the ledge. i was litelary sitting on it. about 3ft more and i would be in serious trouble.

but i will never forget the noise of my bones breaking. it didnt hurt, i just heard it and sudenly couldnt stand on my right foot. the pain started in the evening thought.

when you are in such a position you really do have the time to think about things. its pretty amazing. i was falling for perhaps 1sec, but it seemed more like 10sec to me.

Didn't Kirk get caught by Spock? I think I watched a documentary on that.
On the summit day on Mt. Mckinley in 1979, one of our two rope teams fell 2500 feet.
Two of the three died, but one survived the fall.
He lost all the toes and 8 fingers, and also broke one of his knees.
Mentally, he was totally broken down for a few years.
Everyday he was drinking madly and thinking about killing himself.
But he's finally come out of it and decided to climb again.
The first thing he had to learn, was how to tie shoe lace with 2 fingers.
He is still climbing today.
He is my hero.
This isn't the 79' accident where no-one on the one rope was wearing crampons on the decent from the summit was it?

Things have certainly changed since 1979.. I was told that there were 1100 climbing permits issued this year!

you are lucky. when i fall, weather it's on a sit start, or 12ft. up, it all happens quickly. after i fall, i try to figure out what i could of done differently in the fall, but can't even remember my body position when falling. my partenr however, can write an essay when he falls.

Sorry if it had already been mentioned,( I don’t have the patience to go through 6 pages) but I think the longest fall ever taken by a human was Joe Kittinger’s jump from a balloon in 1960. It was an air force test to see if it was possible to bail out from the edge of space. He jumped from 100,000 feet. Not as crazy as surviving a huge deck shot, but still amazing.

He would have actually jumped from much higher up, but his glove wasn't sealing properly and he was in extreme pain form the cold, so he jumped.

actually, that's not the case. you are right, there was a hole in his glove, it was causing some decompression, and it was causing him some discomfort, but he reached the planned jump altitude. they planned the approximate altitude for other constriants for the test. i'll see if i can find the article stating why it was set there for ya.

Yes, but really it was Spock's fault that he fell, so he owed him.

andy: found it. hope that helps if you're interested in the jumpsWink
"Apparently the glove failed due to a crack in the oxygen line. This would have been enough to abort the mission, but Kittinger did not initially report the problem because he did not want to terminate the test." From http://stratocat.com.ar/fichas-e/1960/HMN-19600816.htm

there was some video i saw a while ago of some paraglider who had a wing collapse from the left side. it folded under him and he looked like one of those fox-tails plunging to the ground. it was something crazy like a 2200ft drop (or more, i don't remember) and only had broken arm (the trees 'caught' the wing on the way down).
Longest fall a human survived: 6 miles and 551 yards; Vesna Vulovic, in the broken off tail section of a DC9 Jan 26, 1972 over the Czech Republic.

I wonder what that person thought about the whole way down. I mean honestly...the thoughts would run something like this: oh sh**! goodbye world......now what?

my guess? they took a nap on the way down.

I co-worker of mine fell from 4 feet up. He hit his head, shattered every tooth in his head, yes all 32 not just the 4 that the typical local has and then went underwent several long surgeries over the course of several weeks. Now he has a terrible time smelling as a result of his sinus cavities being all messed up. I guess that has it's pros and cons.
I think that was worth about a Million.....

Talk about a bit of a thread drift!!!

remeber back in those days the cabins were not pressurized like they are today. Also to keep in mind it does not matter whether you fall from 500 ft or 30 000 feet you can only fall so fast. Its called terminal velocity. So yah given absolutly ideal condsitions i guess it could be possible.

I wonder if you fall from high enough and have enough control to dictate how you hit, would it be better to go feet first (completely wreck your lower body but maybe protect vital organs) or prone (distribute impact force over greater area). Guess it would also depend on what you are impacting.

Yah i think it does and the is probable a ssweet spot that you need to hit which is pretty small so next time you jump out of a plane you should probable not rely on getting lucky and hitting that sweet spot. also by landing on tonnes of soft snow on a steep slope would dedinatly make it a lot more likely if a all possible
