Hello,
now that the outdoor season is almost over, would anyone be interested in meeting up at Cliffhanger to climb? i'm trying to get a group together(a mix, mingle and climb thing)
Cheers

The Edge sounds good. Cliffhanger is too crowded.

Shuffle on down to the rock house in richmond. I try to go there most weekends. Most of the climbers there are like 8-12 year olds that aren't doing the harder climbs. theres about 30 routes and a bunch of bouder routes and a pit. Great place to climb.

I live relatively close to cliffhanger if anyone needs a partner. I've only indoor climbed for 4 months and I'm loving every moment of it; I just wish I had someone to go with on a regular basis

I climb at CH at least 3-4 times per week. Let me know when you will be around and if I go at the same time then we can hook up for sure.

Edge is cool too, I will probably go there ever couple of weeks now that things are slower outdoors (still time to get a few more days in though).

Rockhouse has such short walls. Don't know about the bouldering.

You know about the new CH Coquitlam that is opening the end of the year right?

I go to this great climbing gym in Maple Ridge... the bouldering problems there change regularly and some of the top rope climbes are quite challanging.
I suggest that u give that gym a look at

Have you ever been to any other ones other than the one in Maple Ridge? I don't think it's that great....but then again I don't think any gym climbing is all that great. The Edge in North Van is waaay better.

I'm up for some climbing at the Edge. Gettin' a bit chilly for the outdoors now CH's not my style but I could be arm twisted to go to the Edge. PM me and we'll hook it up. And I'd be up for making the pilgrammage to suss out this new gym in Coquitlam...

I think the question is: the only climbing gym in vancouver is?...Cliffhanger. The next nearest climbing gym would be in Richmond or Coquitlam (Rockreation) and then the North Shore has The Edge. There's also a gym in Surrey called Virtical Reality but I would be too scared to park there (haha a little surrey humor). And by next year I recon Cliffhanger will be available in Coquitlam as well!

Did I miss anything?

I think Rockreation is in Maple Ridge... It's kinda small and unattractive. As for the Rock House... it's ok but, short routes... my guess-timate would be less than 35 feet.

So to sum up then.

Maple Ridge - Rockeation
Surrey - Vertical Reality
Richmond - Rock House
N. Vanc. - The Edge
Vancouver - Cliffhanger
Coquitlam - Cliffhanger Coq. (open Dec/Jan)

So my personal opinion of the gym options in the lower mainland is as follows.
Keeping in mind that I have been to every gym including the new CH Coq, excluding Rockeation.

VR and Rockhouse:

Short, which is the main drawback. Height not more than 35'. I think the year
pass at Rockhouse is cheap (like $250?). VR has leading for some routes, and
has a roof. They tend to do lot of kids parties and since the gym isn't that
big you can hear then everywhere and they really tend to get underfoot.

Rockeation:

Haven't been. Others have said that it is short (35' as I recall), and kinda unattractive.

The Edge:

Nice routes. Has EP wall. slightly less than 40% leadable. Routes tend to be
soft for the grade (11+ == 11), not sure if that holds true for boulder problems.
Large bouldering area. Has showers. Some people say that they see a bit of an
attitude there. I don't notice it but whatever. The National Junior team trains
there for all you youngsters out there. Height ~43.2'. Not that easy to get to with
Transit.

CH Vancouver:

Good routes. Has EP wall, but the EP wall here is shorter than the one at the Edge.
Boulder cave is upstairs out of the way. Leading on the roof and EP wall. Training
room with system board and campus rungs (3 sizes) plus easy bouldering to keep newbies
out of the way. Can be crowded at peak times. Some people don't like the color scheme (tan/brown), it doesn't bother me. People are friendly I find. Height depends on location as the roof slopes, but ranges from 35 to 45 feet. On average about 45' though. Easy to get to with Transit.

CH Coq.:

By far the largest gym in the lower mainland. 3x larger than current CH, ~2x lager than
the Edge. Height 50' everywhere, except one tower. 70%+ leadable. 14' cave. Will
have seperate room for kids parties to keep them out of the way, plus the space is
large enough that kids will not be constantly underfoot even with a large party.
Cool features include dramatic walls (sounds silly but if you stand there and look up
in some locations it just looks cool), couple of chimneys, slab section, couple of ledges
for teaching belaying from the top/rope management skills. Also easy to get to via
transit (near Ikea in Coquitlam). Since the route setters will be CH staff I would expect
the same high quality of routes as CH Vancouver.

If I had to pick one gym to climb at right now, it would be a tough call between the Edge and CH Vancouver. I would probably pick the Edge, but that would be really close. And the communte to the North Shore sucks.

If you asked me the same question next year I would say CH coq. by far. When it opens
it will be the best gym in town by a long shot.

Disclaimer: I climb at CH Vancouver. I don't work there. I do think this is a accurate picture of climbing gyms in Vancouver though.

Will memberships be transferable between the two Cliffhangers? Or will we need to get to memberships to climb at both gyms? Thanks.

Memberships will cost the same at each gym. So if you only want to go to one CH then the cost would be the same for either. If you have a pass at one gym, then there are two options. You can get an add on pass for the other gym for $144 per year or go on a visit by visit basis for $12 per visit, which is reduced from $17. So for both gyms it would cost $445 + $144 for a total of $589. Which is pretty good for two gyms I think.

Obviously the choice of pass vs visit by visit depends on how much you plan to climb at your primary vs secondary gym, since I assume most people would probably still go to one more than the other.
