I'm a Boston climber, but will be visiting family over the weekend and want to take my niece and nephew climbing. I probably only have them for 1/2 a day, so need something close to the Corning/Elmira area. Anything come to mind? I'm not looking for much - it can be a small, toprope area. They are still young and will be happy to just get on real rock.

When I think WNY I think Buffalo/Niagara Falls, but you're a little ways away from that still. I know there's a bit in Allegany, but I've never been there. Might be a bit far for just a half day too.

well the only thing I know about Corning is that I've never heard of any climbing there :P I don't think you're going to want to try and take children that aren't yours across the border so Niagara Glen is out. Little Falls looks like a good option, on moss island you'll find 5.easy 30-40 ft topropes with an easy hike to the top. bring a long static line though as most trees there are ~20ft from the edge. There may be better options in northern PA but I've never been there :P

There is a cool airplane museum in elmira and the corning glassworks. Both would be good activities for a halfday IMO. There is a camp called Li-lo-li that has a large climbing tower. I don't know what their use policy is. There is also reputed to be a place called city of rock out that way somewhere but I have never been there.

little rock city is fun for a hike but there's hardly any climbing of worth besides the fact that they won't allow you to climb. Most of the rock will crumble off in your hand if you try to establish.

Thanks all for the responses... I noticed Blue Run Rocks too and have had others mention it. Hopefully we'll have the time for it!
