Just signed up for the site and thought I'd say "hello". I'm totally new to climbing... the wife and I recently took a beginner's course.

Based in St. Louis.

Hoping to get some practice indoors and eventually move out to the rock. I've always been into other outdoor activities (hiking, backpacking, kayaking) and thought I'd try something new.

What Sungam said...get outside.
The gym has it's place I suppose
but real rock is, well, real rock...

Use the gym to help you meet folks
with experience. Then go climbing!

Gonna agree with sungam on this one.

Head down to Drapers Bluffs (by Lick Creek IL) , it's an easy approach and there are some good bouldering right in front of the bluffs. Talk it up with folks you see climbing.

If you find a friendly group of folks (common at the crag) they might let you use one of their top ropes. Don't forget your harness though.

Welcome to the beginning of your demise, and your wallets demise, maybe even your job.

Hey. I'm over here on the IL side about 20 minutes from St. Louis, stationed at Scott AFB. Hit me up sometime, there are tons of places to climb in Southern Illinois. Look up "Vertical Heartland" and checkout Upperlimits near the Union Station.

If you are looking to get outside, head down to elephant rocks. There are tons of nice boulders there. You can get a free guide on dr.topo.com.

I'll 3rd that...Definitely done some "dirtbag" things to go climbing. I have gone into debt to go climbing...And yes... I have quit my job to go climbing.

It's a beautiful thing...
