The real problem is that people really don't care much whether or not they hit someone with a rope, or else they are so spaced-out that they are unaware of the obvious issues. Dingus mentioned something I rarely see in the Gunks: actually waiting for a response before chucking the ropes. Most people shout rope and throw it simultaneously, providing an almost entirely wortheless warning to a leader directly below but out of sight.

This touches on the entire point of my post. I personally lower when I feel that I cannot be assured of not throwing it on someone, which is almost always at the GUnks. Many Gunks climbs rappel over an overhang that may or may not be the route that you came up. Half the time I am not sure exactly what route I am rappelling over. It is also tough to hear or tell where any response or warning is coming from.

I have also rappelled with the rope flaked over a sling, as you suggested. This works, but I also agree that I never see it done.

So, I guess the point of my thread was NOT for you to agree with me, but to think about the safety of others when you rappel.

How about just be responsible and throw or lower based on the situation? No point in lowering a rope if you are 100% sure it's not going to hit somebody, it's a waste of precious climbing time. I will keep throwing, making sure all is clear before I do.

I do this exclusively (and a lot more frequently) at certain rappels at the Gunks. The Arrow rappell comes to mind.

It never fails to get 'oooh that's such a good idea!" comments. But then that was my reaction when a guy suggested it to me initially.

Now the question I have as I'm starting to do it more, does it work better to have each strand in its own sling, or both flaked together in one sling? THe reason I ask is because when you use doubles, and put in a single sling, that sucker can get heavy! And if you have the strands in seperate slings, it tends to be more difficult to manage I've found.

Thoughts?

I do neither. I extend my rappel device and flake both strands over that sling and feed out as I go. Works like a charm.

I never thought of doing that, usually I clip the slings onto my haul loop. Will have to try next time... what sling length do you extend with out of curiousity?

Probably 12" (over the shoulder size). I usually extend even if I don't flake the rope. It gives me a better braking angle giving me more control on rappels which helps for my skinny doubles.

clipping the ropebag to my harness and letting it feed out as I rap down is my personal favorite.

You in trouble now blue, you in trouble now.
So the question arises, maybe blue has been making all these comments about how he's in deep trouble while logged in as WW. Jess saying.

All right, now I know you're making things up! Canadians don't go to Quincy Quarries. I don't even go to Quincy and I live 20 minutes from there. Cool
