I am planning on heading back down to the Red in early January and was wondering what the conditions are like. I certainly can tolerate cold nights but it sure is nice to have some warm rock come mid-morning. Are there some crags that are especially good for this time of year due to their southern aspect? Any recommendations in general? Thanks.

There are a lot of southern facing and sunny crags at the Red, but not as many as you may think. Trad and sport. Off the top of my head: Drive By Solar Collector Bob Marley Left Flank Pebble Beach - trad Bruise Brothers Funk Rock City Torrent Falls Tower Rock - trad Lots of places. The guidebook is great... one of the best guides I've seen... Pick one up. It will make your trip better and proceeds go to a good cause.

I'll add arsenal and slab city at muir, playground at pmrp. Also Eastern Sky Bridge, and Lady Slipper/Global Village.

I wouldn't count on climbable weather in January. My guess its that it will be cold... most likely too cold. Average highs are in the low 40's for the month of Jan. You will have better luck with the weather further south though.
