I was not sure where to post this... so forgive me if this should be elsewhere.
My friend and I climbed at the PA side of the Gap last Tuesday, and now both of our legs are covered in extermely itchy, irregurlarly shaped rad splotches that seem to migrate. At first, I though they were big bites, but after numerous days they are multiplying. They do not look like the rash from any poisonous plants I have encountered, and we both wore long pants.
Any idea what they could be? It happened to me before after climbing on the Truimverate wall as well.
It's possible the Gap just does not like us. I always pull off some loose rock, the 'trail' twists my ankles, and last summer my friend was bitten by something on his ankle that caused the skin to turn black and fall off coupled with severe weakness and respritory problems (we think a Brown Recluse). Still, it would be nice to know what else to avoid here...

It's a rare and exotic plant called Poison Ivy. There's heaps of it in the gap. I was up there on Wednesday and found large, dripping vines of poison ivy infiltrating the trail. Worse than I have ever seen it.
Oh well, it's things like loose rock and Poison Ivy that keep the yuppies off the gap and in the gym!

My friend has picked up poison ivy there the last two weekends. I was up with friends last weekend and escaped sans rash. None of us picked up any, actually. Pants on the hike in and watching where we walked seemed good enough.
I'll probably get it next time ;)

My initial thought was poison ivy as well, but being a local, I have had my share and these spots are not like any rash I've had before. They also 'itch' differently if that makes sense. I thought they were chigger bites... but I keep getting more of them.
I was just wondering if aside from ticks, spiders, snakes, loose rock and copious amounts of poison ivy there was any other plant to be aware of.
Oh, and i always wear long pants- damn chicken legs.

Seems like a few of my friends got chigger bites up there as well. Maybe thats what they are. Check out www.chiggerbites.org
As for more of them showing up at home... looks like you might have brought a few home in your clothes!

i just moved home to the philly area about 10 or 15 minutes from the philly rock gym in oaks and i am looking for a new climbing partner for either sport at birdsboro or trad i have almost a full rack and can always chip in for gas or meet people places. i lead about 5.10 sport and about 5.6 trad

I work at the oaks gym. I climb about 5.10 sport as well. We should try to climb together sometime.

sorry for the interruption, but not really familiar with the site (certainly not the thread!) and not sure where else to go with this.
going to be in eastern pa., (easton, actually) from sept 26-29 for the jewish holidays. interested in doing some bouldering, maybe nockamixon state park or some such? theoretically i boulder up to v4, but more realistically i ought to consistently be able to do around v2. also might be up for north summit climbing gym, but rather not bring my harness across the continents and rather just be outside -

Hey
You should check out Haycock .There is really great bouldering there! There is a link to it in routes database under Southeastern PA. The only thing about Haycock is it has notoriously bad landing and a long approach, so bring a pad and friends.

Hey all. I never use this site, but there's a good chance I'll be moving out to Philly in about a month or so. I've lived in California my whole life, and spend the summers living in Yosemite. What are some good resources for climbing in the area? And what about bouldering? Any slackers?

An abandoned quarry with some decent sport (Birdsboro) is about an hour west. Ralph Stover State Park (High rocks) has decent sport, limited trad, and mostly toproping about an hour north. Haycock mountain has amazing diabase bouldering, again maybe an hour north?
There is some great climbing in northeastern PA, but it is mostly on private land, so bringing large groups from the Philly Rock Gym is not an option. If you can respect the local gems, than you will find that PA climbing is plenty enough to keep you strong and stoked between roadtrips.
Speaking of:
North Options:
3 hours to the gunks
5 hours to the Adirondacks
6 hours to Rumney
7 hours to the Whites
10 to Maine
South:
4 to Coopers rock
4 to Seneca
6 to the New
9.5 to the Red
Meet some partners locally, there are some very tight-knit, trustworthy groups around here. We'll show you the good stuff!

Hey All,
Coming back to Pa for Christmas and looking for some people to climb with and some beta.
Been living in Utah working for BD for the last two years and hoping climb a bunch while I'm in PA. Hoping to get to the gyms: both PRGs and GoVertical while I'm home.
Does anyone know how much sun the bigwall at Birdsboro gets during the winter? I know it will probably be cold, but oh well.. How does the Delaware water gap climb this time of year.

The Water Gap is nice on sunny days. PA side early in the day and Jersey side if you're climbing in the afternoon.

Unfortunately the guidebook page's "Update" was posted May 2008 with no word since then. I e-mailed Rob about it a few weeks ago to see if there is any new status or an e-mail notification list to be put on, but there has been no reply.

He isn't going to publish the entire book online, because then ppl. could just print the whole thing out.
Instead he has given us a few nice chunks of the book, so we could see the format and details and decide if we want to buy the real thing.
It has been a huge undertaking for Rob to compile this book, and due to his recent wedding and move across the country, things were put on hold for a little while. It's not exactly cheap to print a 400 page guidebook.
I'm excited to see the finished product, and can't wait for it to be available!
